815907 2009-10-01 04:26:00 Don't you find it funny that when ever there is a major disaster eg earth quake or tsunami, or floods that other countries always want to know what sort of help is needed. This takes a few days.

Surely in all of those cases it is obvious what is needed, food, water treament plants, basic medicines, tents, clothes. So why not just send those over right away.

They are hardly gonna come back and say we need some plasma tv's, second hand books, dvd videos, lawn mowers, sexy lingerie, lazy boy chairs.....

815908 2009-10-01 04:49:00 Nice reasoning, but lets assume that every one sends medicine, so there's no food, blankets, R18 books etc... the_bogan (9949)

The world would simply fall into utter chaos.

But then people would be too busy doing other stuff to do crime? :banana

815913 2009-10-01 07:50:00 what we need is about 20 depot's setup around the world.
very big sheds with ready to go boxes of food, water treament plants, basic medicines, tents, clothes, generators, radio/cell phone systems and such.

the depot's are run by the UN (or red cross)

when crap happens the UN can ship as many boxes as needed from the nearest depot.
when donations start arriving, they are used to re-stock the depot.

and funded from the IMF.

PS. I am sure this idea has holes in it, I just made it up in the last 60 seconds.

feel free to debate...

My original post was partly in jest, as they always want to know what is needed.
Your suggestion is very good. The only worry would be getting someone to administer it and the financing.

815916 2009-10-01 18:19:00 The cost of help always seems to delay the action of helping.
They (UN, crisis centres etc) should have at least a basic set up that automatically sends out bare essentials in these cases to bide them time for their money raising, then hire a wash up singer to write a soppy ballad to donate 3% of all earnings from sales (yes Im kidding about the singer!).
