| 814632 | 2009-09-28 00:41:00 | Finding one for a mate - he doesn't do anything demanding on it, and was going to buy a Macbook Pro (hisssss) until I slapped some sense into him. I'm thinking either this (ascent.co.nz) or this (ascent.co.nz). Probably leaning towards the first option, as it has a slightly faster CPU, would double the RAM though. Thoughts? Happy to spend up to ~$2k  |

| 814635 | 2009-09-28 00:57:00 | Cool - and how can I be sure that it will come with an upgrade path to Windows 7? Are all Vista OEM models being sold now coming with that, or is it still make/model specific? And on that 16" model, isn't that native resolution quite low for a screen of that size (1366x768)? |

| 814636 | 2009-09-28 01:03:00 | Cool - and how can I be sure that it will come with an upgrade path to Windows 7? You'd need to ask, some models do, some don't. It can also depend on how old they are. And on that 16" model, isn't that native resolution quite low for a screen of that size (1366x768)? It's not too bad, what a TV manufacturer would call *HD Ready*. :D Most 16" lappys will run on that res or similar. |

Glad to see you slapped the Mac outta him. If he wants to save $$ he could get a cheaper ASUS, since you say he is not going to do anything demanding on it. But if he has the money, the 1st choice is the one. |

But really, for $2000 you get a lot of laptop for your money...for word processing, email and internet browsing do you really need a 2.4ghz dual core? Just me 2c anyways. Blam |

| 814639 | 2009-09-28 19:33:00 | First In (www.firstin.co.nz) has a Toshiba for only $950. Not ASUS but still adequate and a bargain. Unfortunately the deal is only valid for a short time. |

I've set up/sold 3 of those in the last week or so, they hum along nicely. The ones we got have got the Win7 upgrade thingie too, not sure if those ones do though. :) |

| 814641 | 2009-09-28 20:08:00 | Yeah I'm with blam6, lets be honest here, if you're just word-processing, browsing, emailing / IM'ing, then your CPU is going to sit idle about 95% of the time. It kinda bugs me when people go ape about the CPU, when they don't do any kind of gaming, video encoding, audio / image editing / whatever ... in fact I'd bet if you sat them down at two machines, one with a 1.8Ghz Celeron and another with a 2.6Ghz Quad-Core and said "OK, now go browse, here's Chrome", they'd not know the difference after an hour. 2GB -> 4GB RAM is where it's at, that's where the difference will be noticed, and in HDD speeds! Spend $1K on a nice Satellite L300 from PBTech / FirstIn, spend an extra $100 on RAM or whatever to bring it up to 4GB, and know that 9/10 people probably *never* get anywhere near stressing the machine, even if it's a Celeron, unless they're gaming ;) That said, I just spend $1300 on a dual-core L300 Pro for SWMBO so she can start doing some low-key gaming, Warcraft III and the likes ;) |
