1110414 2010-06-15 05:29:00 3/4 of the time when I restart my Windows 7 PC, it has started automatically running a chkdsk. It never seems to find a problem, but it's getting really annoying. Does anyone have any ideas on this, please? Webhed (11236)
1110415 2010-06-15 07:47:00 This link should help you. Prepare to tweak your registry:

1110416 2010-06-15 08:12:00 Thanks for that, Vallis. Unfortunately, my BootExecute value already reads autocheck autochk *. Webhed (11236)
1110417 2010-06-15 08:15:00 Something is triggering chkdsk, could be a fault on the HDD (faulty Sectors possibly), or even corrupted files someplace, its running for a reason.

While you can disable it Via the above link in the reg ( sometimes but not always), if the drive does in fact have a problem, then it will still run regardless.

One other thing you can try:

Have a look at This site (www.winvistaclub.com) (where it says "Or else try this " )- while it says it a vista site it will work for W7 since W7 is built from vista (standard commands) Substitute G in the page for the drive letter of your drive, Eg: C:

Edited: removed quote -- site linked shows the commands better

1110418 2010-06-15 08:23:00 Thanks, wainuitech. The fsutil check told me that neither of my drives were dirty. Webhed (11236)
1110419 2010-06-15 08:31:00 Hmm ok -- What happens if you run CHKNTFS /X C: (with C being your main drive) - does chkdsk run on next reboot.

If it doesn't run chkdsk /r anyway OR better option go into start/Computer/ Right click your drive / properties/ tools Tab/ Check Now -- Tick both boxes As shown Here (www.imagef1.net.nz) -- it will pop up with a messages asking to run on next reboot, agree and reboot the PC, it WILL take a while since its also scanning all sectors on the drive.

Depending on the size of the drive it can sometimes easily take an hour or more.

1110420 2010-06-15 11:36:00 Is your computer actually switching off properly?

Are you telling it to shut down, or are you Hibernating?

Do you use the power switch to turn it off?

1110421 2010-06-15 11:54:00 I rarely turn it off Paul. But when I do I use the stsrt button and tell it to switch off. Webhed (11236)
1110422 2010-06-15 11:58:00 If you are still worried it might pay to download the drive diagnostics from your drive manufacturer and run a full scan of the drive. Sweep (90)
1110423 2010-06-15 21:01:00 Alrighty, then. I did a chkntfs /x c: and it didn't perform a chkdsk on reboot. I then performed a scan of both my internal and external drives (I keep all my documents, pictures and movies on an external drive) and they have both come up clean, with no bad sectors.
