1109712 2010-06-13 03:29:00 I am about to buy a new HDD for my desktop. I intend to get a 500Gb disk, probably WD. According to the local PCs unlimited website I can get 500Gb SATA 2 16mb disk for $109, and a WD "Black Edition" 500Gb SATA 2 32mb disk for $129. The present HDD is 260Gb SATA, but reports bad sectors. Is the extra cache worth having? Brucem (8688)
1109713 2010-06-13 04:41:00 of the top of my head i think the black edition is a faster version. i would get model of the other one and find some reviews sites and compare. imho for $20 more i would get the bigger cache one. tweak'e (69)
1109714 2010-06-13 04:56:00 It is not just extra cache, the WD Black is sold as their performance drive and can be a bit noisier but should be faster and comes with a 5 year warranty. I suggest you shop around though. Ascent which is not normally the cheapest, has the Black 500 GB at $106.41.

Is there a reason you want a 500GB drive? It is a bit below the sweet point for pricing. To give an example the Caviar Blue 640GB is selling for $103.17
