1109235 2010-06-11 09:20:00 Hi, haven't got a new lappie for some time now ..

In terms of upgrading HDs how picky are they now? How do you ascertain what you can and cannot use? Are they now swappable to SSDs?

1109236 2010-06-11 09:30:00 I guess they are if they make them in that size. Apart from that so long as you use SATA or PATA depending on the connection to the mobo. gary67 (56)
1109237 2010-06-11 09:36:00 If you are talking modern laptops, they are not picky at all, I've gone from 40GB to 60GB SSD to 320GB WD Black edition and had no issues running any of them. Deimos (5715)
1109238 2010-06-11 10:06:00 You shouldn't have any more problems than you would with a desktop.

You may on rare occasion find some strange mounting scheme which is not compatible with 100% of drives but it's more likely you will run into the BIOS maximum size limitation first (and even then that won't happen very often now)

By now, everything *should* be good up to 2TB. After that, there may be some issues however... but I don't think 2TB drives actually exist for laptops yet anyway.

1109239 2010-06-11 22:07:00 Cheers all :)

In my days you had to pay particular attention to the bios and get the size it suggest and sometimes even down to the brand and model :D and sometimes a bios upgrade was required.

1109240 2010-06-11 22:37:00 Just make sure if you're pulling it out, as Agent_24 mentioned, keep everything from the old drive, such as the additional mounting brackets or whatever you want to call them.

It holds them in place a little more snugly on half the laptops I've seen :)

1109241 2010-06-12 02:15:00 Yeah if you don't use the mounting brackets the drive can wobble around and may be damaged or the connection can become loose and cause problems. Agent_24 (57)
