Title: Urgent warning to residents in the Norsewood area

Police are hunting a gunman in the Tararua District and advising residents to stay inside and lock doors.

Around 3.45pm police began the pursuit of a vehicle after the driver made off following a breath-test. The pursuit was called off a short time later for safety reasons.

The offending vehicle then crashed at Butcher's Creek, north of Norsewood. It is believed that a police patrol car was shot at as they arrived at that location.

The armed offender ran off and reports were then received that a farm worker had been shot at a house nearby. The circumstances surrounding this shooting are unclear at the moment. The injured man is believed to be a farmer or farm worker and has been shot in the shoulder. His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

Police have numerous cordons in the area and are still trying to locate the gunman. A car, which is believed to be the offender's vehicle, has been located.

Police also believe they know the identity of the man. His name is not being made public at this stage but he is believed to be 46 years old, white European, about 170cms tall with a stocky build. He should not under any circumstances be approached and any sightings should be reported to police immediately.

SH2 is closed and will remain so for some time. All residents in the Takapau, Ormondville and Norsewood areas, and in between are asked to stay inside, lock doors and stay away from windows.

Operations Manager Inspector David White: "Locating the offender and the safety of the public and police staff is our primary concern at this stage. As that is our focus we are not in a position to confirm or discuss in any details the incidents leading up to this point or possible motives for this man's actions. Further information will be made available as soon as we have it and residents and motorists are advised to monitor the media for updates around pubic safety and road closures."

Media enquiries should be referred to Communications Manager Kim Perks on 06 351 2546 or 027 234 8256.

Title: More details becoming clear about shooting

Police are gradually piecing together the sequence of events surrounding a shooting in the Tararua District and trying to build up a picture of the gunman.

Police initially received a complaint from a member of the public about bad driver behaviour. A police patrol vehicle stopped the car just north of Dannevirke and carried out a breath screening that the driver failed. At that point he made off from the police officer and there was a short pursuit but it was called off for public safety reasons and police briefly lost sight of the vehicle.

As the same officer reached Butcher's Creek he came across a minor car crash involving the offender's vehicle. The officer approached the vehicle and a man started to get out of the vehicle carrying a firearm. The officer ran back towards his vehicle and heard the shotgun discharged.

The offender then left on foot.

A short time later two farm workers came across a man with a shotgun on nearby land. The man suggested he was hunting rabbits and was advised by the farm workers that he should not be doing so. As the farm workers returned to their truck the shotgun was discharged towards them injuring one of the men in the shoulder. He is currently in hospital and his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Police have carried out a search of the offender's car and the body of a man has been found in that car. Police are currently trying to confirm the identity of that man. Early information suggests it is not the offender but this is still to be confirmed and until police are able to confirm the identity the search continues and the cordons remain in place.

Public safety warnings remain in place. Residents are advised to stay inside, lock doors and stay away from windows. Residents are also asked make contact with vulnerable neighbours to check on welfare and issue them with the same advice. This should be done by phone and not in person as everyone is asked to remain inside their homes.

The offender is described as 46 years old, white European, about 170cms tall with a stocky build. He should not under any circumstances be approached and any sightings should be reported to police immediately.

Road diversions are in place for light vehicles only. If travelling north turn left at Norsewood Village into Ngamoko Road. Turn left into Ellison Road, then right into Snee Road. Follow Snee Road until you meet up again with SH2. Some of this route is gravel road and there are some narrow bridges. The reverse applies to people travelling south.

Media enquiries should be referred to Communications Manager Kim Perks on 06 351 2546 or 027 234 8256.

Something tells me this is going to be big.

So when you say BIG what do you mean.

Probably some idiot fueled on P or alcohol or really annoyed about something or another. Or a candidate for a Mental Hospital.

Why not wait and see what actually happens possibly some two or three years down the track?

816802 2009-10-04 08:56:00 Probably is, but it has the hallmarks of something big, also, since the tsunami that wasn't, they need something to put in the headlines.

This has that feel about it to me.

Are you now denying a tsunami actually happened?

I don't think it happened in New Zealand but some idiots were dopey enough to go out of their way to visit the foreshore and here was me thinking that was owned by Maori. The Maori were possibly asleep at that time but they really should have been demanding koha.

Anyway I now see that the NZ Govt is adding another $1,000,000 to same amount promised earlier.

Why not move all residents of Samoa, Cook Islands and etc to New Zealand. Auckland for example has a bigger population of Samoans than Samoa has.

As I live in Tokoroa we have a fairly large population of Samoans and people from the Cook Islands as well for that matter.

Just checked and found I lived in the central North Island near enough around 1100 feet above sea level. No need to worry about a large wave getting to my place.
