1109686 2010-06-14 09:51:00 Word of advice on setup:

Download the Tomato firmware and extract it, on your computer, so you'll be looking at a few files
Unplug your PC from the cable modem, then plug it in to one of the LAN ports on the WRT54GL
Open up: http://192.168.1.1
Under the Administration / Maintenance section, there's a place where you can select a Firmware Upgrade, do that and choose the Tomato firmware file with "54GL" in the name somewhere
Let it do the upgrade, should take approx 2 mins

When it's done, plug in the "WAN" from the WRT54GL to the Cable Modem and everything should "just work" from there. You can then look under "Basic" in Tomato and give your Wireless a security key.

Easy :)

Easy :)I thought the Tomato upgrade would void the warranty.?
Also remember I am a novice at this. Can I not do the Tomato upgrade at a later stage.?

You can upgrade at a later stage if you want. At least with the earlier versions of Tomato (I first upgraded mine a couple of years ago), the settings were all retained after the upgrade. Pretty sure this should still be the case, as the format Linksys use for the settings are well-known; see below.

I doubt the warranty would be affected unless you did something really stupid - the big selling point of the 'GL variant is that the firmware is open-source (the 'L' stands for Linux) & is hence Cisco/Linksys are practically encouraging use of 3rd-party firmware.

Easy :)I presume I extract the firmware to a folder and navigate to these files and it will be obvious which file/files I need to open.?
Although your instructions are clear, I think I am a bit worried that I will muck up!!

Also I guess I have power on the WRT54GL as I note in some of the setup videos reference is made to what to power up.?

Yes, it will be obvious which you need. Just look through the list for the file with "54GL" in the name.

"Power up" is referencing plugging the device in to the power. Once it's plugged in, it will "power up" over the next 30 seconds.

Don't worry about mucking up, once you're actually *doing* it, you'll be fine. The hardest part is just settling your nerves before trying it all ;)

1109691 2010-06-15 01:15:00 Thanks for prompt reply and encouragement. I should get the router later in the week so all will be revealed once I get started. LOL. Pato (2463)
1109692 2010-06-15 22:37:00 Chilling, Just want to confirm that when I install Tomato Firmware that I have the router connected to the power.?
I guess the power has to be on but just want to make sure as I don't want to end up with a 'brick'.
I have to wait three weeks for supply so I have plenty of time to think about it. LOL.

1109693 2010-06-15 23:14:00 Yup, power has to be on or the device won't work ;)

Honestly, I should do a Video Tutorial coz you'll look back once you've done it and think "Wow that was surprisingly easy!". Nothing to worry about.

1109695 2010-06-15 23:58:00 No worries mate. There's a first time for everything, and while it seems daunting, it's surprisingly straight-forward and not much can go wrong :) Chilling_Silence (9)
