817484 2009-10-06 20:57:00 So is the concensus that Avast is still the best free AV???

I reckon you could build quite a good package based around the Microsoft one but not relying on it. Using the anti-spyware products that are out there and things like Script Defender (www.analogx.com), Baseline Analyser etc would help a lot on a family computer.

Of course you could run a PC without an anti-virus if you followed good practice like not opening e mail attachments, but most people aren't likely to do that. I've never got a virus on a PC unless doing something I knew was risky, like opening an e mail attachment. Even so I can't recall the last time I got a virus alert, it's more a safety net than a day to day protection.

817485 2009-10-06 21:08:00 Just dont use P2P programs, go to dodgy sites, do anything stupid like open attachments from people you dont know. Then you probably wont need one Speedy Gonzales (78)

You are a wise guru !

My Nod32 is due for renewal. Through inertia it is still on our PC which is least used. Whilst have Avast on our laptop, which is used every day.

Think I will renew our Nod32 but instal it instead on our laptop. Then instal MS Security Suite on our PC.

817487 2009-10-07 00:32:00 Well to say I was shocked:eek: at what avast didn't detect is an understatement. I'm going to remove avast , and put Nod onto the drive, and see what it picks up

Just run Nod32 through the Drive that had Avast - a further 44 Infections found. (set it going before I went out this morning)

817488 2009-10-07 00:53:00 I've installed MSSE 4 times today where Avast would normally be installed. Impressed with it so far.

Almost looking like it's bye bye Avast - just want to see how MSSE behaves when it gets spy-wared. :p

817489 2009-10-07 00:54:00 Good idea!
Next time I get an infected machine in the workshop I'll do some testing as well.

817490 2009-10-07 01:10:00 I'd be really keen to see an infected drive taken, imaged with something like SelfImage, then run through with each of these individually:
Avast
AVG
MSSE
McAfee
NOD32
Norton AV

If anybody has a heavily infected drive they want to send to me, I'd be happy to run the experiment? :D

Any indication as to what these infections were?

817492 2009-10-07 02:08:00 I have just installed MSE and it is merrily doing its first scan. I have noticed that it doesn't have a user setting for checking for virus definition updates - how does that work? There is a setting for frequency of scans, and an option for downloading the latest definitions prior to the scan, but that doesn't seem adequate compared with other anti virus software.

Is updating just an automatic process that will go on daily or something?

817493 2009-10-07 02:20:00 Any indication as to what these infections were? These are the Scan Results (www.imagef1.net.nz) on the drive that had Avast - the 44 it missed, that Nod32 found.

Bit slow this afternoon so -- Cant be bothered with paper work today.

Doing something I wouldn't normally do (work) Only kidding. :p

loaded the original copy of the infected drive, went into both Nod32 and malware bytes - restored the infections from quarantine. Cloning the drive again, going to run Norton 2010.

Not interested in what the different malware programs detect as they are consistent. ( Malwarebytes, Spybot etc).
