817474 2009-10-06 19:46:00 Been using Nod 32 for about five years and just signed up for another two, seems to do the job well .

Malwarebytes and Superantispyware look after the spyware pretty effectively and Secunia is worth having as well .

Will try the MS one as well, was recommended on Security Now, well recommended you give it a go anyway .

Interesting about Avast, I know a lot of IT people who use it but looks like time for a rethink .

817475 2009-10-06 19:48:00 MSE will disable windows defender. You cant run both at the same time Speedy Gonzales (78)
817476 2009-10-06 19:55:00 MSE will disable windows defender. You cant have it and MSE running at the same time:clap Thats not a bad thing either, Windows defender is close to hopeless anyway. wainuitech (129)
817477 2009-10-06 20:07:00 Twelvevolts, my thoughts exactly about Avast :(

At least for those not keen to pay for NOD32 have a decent free alternative ...

817479 2009-10-06 20:35:00 Keeping in mind -the question is -- Will MS Security STOP the infections in the first place from getting there - only time will tell.

It wont need to stop these things from getting installed if the user uses a standard account instead of an admin account. I'm sure you realise running windows as administrator is the same as running linux as root.

817480 2009-10-06 20:41:00 We're talking about Microsoft Security Essentials I presume.
Looking at the website and playing the installation video, it claims to be anti spyware as wall as AV. Seems it failed pretty badly on spyware, thanks to Malwarebytes on Wainui's test.
I guess it's OK to have MB running too. Yet MS advises removing all other AV and antispyware before installing

817481 2009-10-06 20:46:00 So is the concensus that Avast is still the best free AV??? Gobe1 (6290)
817482 2009-10-06 20:47:00 Just installed it and didn't uninstalll anything else, no obvious side effects.

Ran for about half an hour and found nothing. Then again I have just about every anti-spyware worth having and well as Secunia, Baseline Analyser etc etc

817483 2009-10-06 20:54:00 We currently use "Symantec 11.0" at work and it is a dog.
I am considering replacing Symantec 11, with Windows Defender and MSE in the future.

This is why the testing - untl now MS products have been consistently totally useless.

Windows Defender is just a pretty picture - there to look nice and fool you into thinking it actually does something.

Use MS AV plus Spybot and Malware Bytes if you want free products.
