816731 2009-10-04 06:02:00 Trade Me.

I have been looking for one myself and had no luck at supermarkets or the Warehouse.

A guy at Briscoes informed me that retail stores across the whole country will be out of electric heaters until around March due to underestimating the winter demand for them!

However you can still get them for next to nothing off TradeMe.

816732 2009-10-04 06:09:00 Ok..........Just to confuse the situation.....

No my mum doesnt actually own the house, as when my dad died last year, he gave it to my sister, this house is a granny flat on my sisters property.
and to recap recently my mother had a stroke and has the start of dementia and is using a walker to walk with. She is 77 years old and the OT says she is not sick or unwell enough to be placed in care.
She feels the cold dreadfully. 4 - 5 years ago my father decided to replace the pot belly fire they had. with a pretty gas false fire, that has a built in fan. which suited my dad. he was paying the bill then and my mum didnt have a say or a choice or even know how much it cost.
we have had a discussion in the family and think if she still in the house next winter we will get a heat pump, but ts been cold for longer than we anticipated.

and today i went to mitre 10, 2xcountdowns, pak n sav, new world, and they didnt have a heater. we were too late for briscoes, noel leeming, and harvey norman as they were shut.

so i guess its too late to find a heater.

816733 2009-10-04 07:17:00 Beetle,

I feel rather sorry about what is going on down in Metlaville.

I take it that the Landlord would be your Sister possibly.

3 or 4 hundred per month is sodding ridiculous.

Don't have gas at my place and I live alone in a one bedroom unit.

My power bill for a month is roughly $100 and the most it ever was this last winter was $124.92. I have set up an automatic payment of $90.00 per month to my supplier and the last bill I got I was $76.57 in credit.

I expect it will be less next winter as a few days ago contractors arrived and I got insulation installed both under floor and in the ceiling at no cost to me.

I do admit to being rather chilled a few times so I turned the electric blanket on and went to bed rather earlier than I would have done normally. I think the blanket uses less electricity than a 1200 Watt heater would do. I have also been guilty of turning off the hot water for 5 of the 7 days of the week.

Buy her a heater on Trade Me quick. Don't bother looking in stores, they're all out. It's been a long and cold winter.

There are dozens on there, eg www.trademe.co.nz

816735 2009-10-04 07:37:00 Perhaps you could try the warehouse. I recently got a heater from there. It's one of those ones that rotates from left to right and back again. convair (13650)
816736 2009-10-04 19:07:00 I tired this exercise in the weekend, trying to buy a heater. The one in our babies room we found some rust on so we took it back.

Farmers nothing, briscoes nothing, warehouse nothing. Bunnings however did have some if not directly on the shelves then on their upper shelves.

Not sure about mitre 10 didn't try there.. We were looking for column heaters. Gas bottle ones = evil, especially in a babies room, as they give out so much liquid into the air.

816737 2009-10-04 19:14:00 OK, I do own an electric heater. Doesn't get used much.

I hunted around for one and found the decent ones were super expensive and the rest were flimsy rubbish.

Ended up finding a real one at The Pawn Shop.

816738 2009-10-04 20:32:00 Get a heat pump installed.

The local council/energy board should have an assistance programme in place which will lessen the costs :)

Ok................ i can safely say the search for a heater is now off.........

:banana

as my big sister went in to town this morning.......and grumped at 2 mega mitre 10 people ( could they check) who went out to the storage area and bought out a large new heater, and it is now sitting in my mums house.
:clap

They said they had quite a few but they were packed away, and apparently heaps of people were asking for them yesterday, but none of the staff i talked too or others talked to could be bothered to look or even knew if they had any................... is that good customer relations? so how many sales did they loose yesterday.
so today they sold one heater, how many should they have sold?

so thanks all for the help, ideas and what not, i can rest easy at the moment.
