816650 2009-10-04 04:37:00 A friend of mine who gives me free range eggs from her lifestyle block says that eggs only develop into chicks if the eggs are kept warm, eg underneath the hen or in an incubator. If they are taken from the hen and put in the fridge the chick will not develop or grow.

One trick that she does is hold the eggs up to a light to check for blood spots under the shell as she likes to give people "perfect" eggs. I am not sure but I would think one would be able to see a chick inside the egg with this method.

It is far easier just to test to see if they float in water. A fresh egg will lie flat in a bowl of water. Slightly old will be top up and truly old will float. Good way to choose eggs for incubation.

816652 2009-10-04 19:24:00 The friend is rather embarrassed. She's not so good at keeping track what the hens are doing, supposedly there is one area for eggs to collect and another for ones being allowed to become new chickens.

I've told her that the hens haven't been informed properly of this arrangement......

816653 2009-10-04 20:49:00 Apparently the roosters have a better arrangement for finding out what the hens are doing R2x1 (4628)
