816570 2009-10-03 20:47:00 Home Premium *will* be sufficient for the better part of the population, really. It is the Premium home edition, not a budget cut-down version lacking nice features.

Plan on upgrading all the machines at home ASAP (My work laptop, my desktop, wifes laptop, the media PC.. just for starters, before I move on to my families PCs!), I feel bad, but I've become a convert! ;)

That + Security Essentials = happy me

816571 2009-10-03 20:50:00 So what MAJOR differences are there between Premium and Professional? One HUGE advantage professional has over Premium , is Professional will run the Free XP mode .

johcar -- Ascent are selling OEM without hardware - which according to the terms of usage for OEM is against the MS agreement, esp if its the System Builders Version ( which I suspect it is)

You decide . ESP - Q 2

Heres the Usgae rights of OEM system software for Vista -One can expect W7 to be the same .

Q . What are the different ways in which Microsoft OEM System Builder Windows desktop operating system licenses can be distributed?

A . Preinstalled on a new PC . Unopened OEM System Builder packs (1-, 3-, or 30-packs) can be distributed to other system builders . They must remain unopened so the receiving system builder can accept and be bound by the break-the-seal license agreement that is affixed to the pack . They are not intended for end users .

Q . Can I distribute an unopened 1-pack to an end user?

A . OEM System Builder software is designed for OEM system builders for preinstallation on new PCs . The outside of the pack states, "Intended for PC and server manufacturers or assemblers ONLY . " While unopened packs can be distributed to other system builders, they are not intended for end users .

Q . Can I distribute an unopened 1-pack to another system builder?

A . Yes, as long as the pack remains unopened and the other system builder can accept the break-the-seal license agreement affixed to the side of the unopened pack .

Q . Can I create my own recovery disks and sell these with the computer systems that I build?

A . No . System builders may not create their own recovery solutions with removable media (e . g . , a recovery CD) . A full version of the Windows operating system is provided on a hologram CD in the Microsoft System Builder pack for each end user . The hologram CD acts as the recovery media and must be transferred to the end user at the time of distribution . However, system builders can offer a hard disk recovery solution in addition to, but not as a replacement for, the distribution of the hologram CD . Third-party software companies can also help system builders do this . Learn more about the legal, licensing, and technical requirements for this type of hard disk–based recovery solution .

Q . What is the Windows Genuine Advantage program?

A . Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) is an online validation program from Microsoft to help customers gain the assurance that they are using genuine Windows software . Microsoft asks users to validate their Windows software when requesting a genuine Windows download from the Microsoft Download Center or Windows Update site . Validation is a quick, easy-to-use process that enables you to verify that your copy of Windows is genuine . Get more system builder–specific information or end-user information on WGA .

Q . My customer wants to buy a "naked" PC from me and acquire a Windows license through a Volume Licensing agreement . Is this OK?

A . No . Full Windows licenses are not available through any Microsoft Volume Licensing program, including academic volume licenses . The customer must first acquire a Windows operating system license via OEM software included with a new PC from an OEM or system builder, or via the retail channel . Get more information .

816573 2009-10-03 21:01:00 Is windows 7 for sale now?, which will die next xp or vista? prefect (6291)
816574 2009-10-03 21:05:00 Is windows 7 for sale now?, which will die next xp or vista?

I think vista will stay strong for awhile mainly because alot of home users don't see the need to fork out that much money (my parents for example) when what they have serves them well. These are the people that get a OS upgrade when they buy a new PC.

XP will have a small contingent of die hard fans and people that dont have a good enough system to run windows 7.

816575 2009-10-03 21:12:00 So I can . . . but am i breaking the law if I do? Its not like its piracy or anything so maybe . . . No you're not - It appears Ascent is - BUT thats going by what they put OEM .

To the best of my knowledge, and I have access to all the OEM software as well, there is only the system builders OEM .

All I can say is re read the Agreement above that is available to Vista ( this was more or less the same with XP) .

Also have a look at Playtech Selling W7 ( . playtech . co . nz/product . php?action=showdetail&id=8188" target="_blank">www . playtech . co . nz) -- Look at the disclaimer right under the shipping costs .
