1111356 2010-06-18 07:17:00 Newbie here, have a 5yr old computer with a ADSL2 + router and on broadband, have bought new laptop and want both to be connected to internet, wireless seems to be the way to go, so do I buy a wireless modem router or do I get something else that connects what I already have? And will I be able to follow instructions? is it simple or do I give up now?:help: culbysgirl (15839)
1111357 2010-06-18 07:21:00 Whats the brand / model of the router? Some have built in wireless. So, if you want to use wireless, you dont have to buy anything else. You just have to enable wireless / then configure it Speedy Gonzales (78)
1111358 2010-06-18 07:32:00 It has D - Link on the top of it - DSL 502T underneath ( is that what you mean?) culbysgirl (15839)
1111359 2010-06-18 07:34:00 Sorry if you mean the one I have bought it is a Belkin wireless modem router, the other is the one connected at the moment. culbysgirl (15839)
1111360 2010-06-18 07:46:00 Does it say ADSL anywhere?

If it does not:
Keep your setup as is and plug the wireless router into the existing one. There should be step by step instructions. They're usually pretty well written for non-techies.

If it does:
1.)Make sure that you have the settings for your current router that were provided to you by whoever you get your internet through.
2.)Unplug old router.
3.)Put exact same cables in new one.
4.)Follow step-by-step instructions.

Either way, make sure that you add a password to your network. Not only will it potentially save you money if people steal your internet, it could save you a criminal case in the unlikely (but not unheard of) situation that said person does something illegal from your network.

You could.

Or as you already have the modem, you could just buy a wireless router and plug the modem into it.

Oh look, there's one:
