1110702 2010-06-16 07:41:00 Got changed over to the Red Network this morning. Could not get a connection until I entered in the DNS settings into TCP/IP.
It does not work if I enter them into the modem itself which is bizarre.
And more bizarre why do I suddenly need to specify the DNS servers now when I didn't need to before?

Also, related or not? The phone rings OK but not with it's normal ring, it does a kind of long drawn out ringgggggg ring ring ringgggggggg thing now. Weird. And there's an echo - I can hear myself......None of this happened until the swtich over happened this morning. Normal or something faulty?

1110703 2010-06-16 08:27:00 VDSL isn't compatible with cabs, maybe they've tried chucking you onto red without realising you're on a cab? Not sure if it would work at all but meh. Possible I guess.

I mean clearly you're connected right now, but is it working well enough? I don't doubt it's vodafone's stuff up but their CS is really quite lazy, so they'll try blaming you first.

If you have everything set up as it should be, then give em a ring and tell them that. You won't really get anywhere with them still, but maybe you'll get one of the brighter techs and they'll at least be of some use.

Also, have you noticed your cap has gone up? I'm on ultimate and got a nice surprise today, my cap has increased by 10gb.

.

Hardly.

And the DNS settings is how related to this?

1110705 2010-06-16 10:49:00 Sounds rather odd to me...

Telephone echoing and ringing funny though sounds like a completely different kind of fault to one where your DNS settings don't work.

Maybe Vodafone (I assume that's who you've changed to) do things a little differently in regard to the DNS settings?

Ring them about the phone acting strange. They're probably more likely to act on that. Then they may find some other fault along the way. Or perhaps it is one fault with two connected but completely different symptoms...

1110706 2010-06-16 13:23:00 No idea.

Thinking back on it though, I have had the echoing phone before at a previous address, which only happened periodically, but the house was pretty old. I constantly had people complain that my phone wasn't coming through very well (or at all, in later stage actually)
In fact, phones generally echo and feed back when they're disconnected, don't they?
Wouldn't that suggest that you're getting a faulty connection/noise on the line?

Could check your line noise statistics on the modem see if they're higher/lower than they should be?

1110707 2010-06-16 20:39:00 Hmmm, well I didn't note what I had before, so a bit hard to say, seems to be within reasonable limits and no errors or lost packets or anythuing. Speed is lovely. Just the weirdness with the ringing (which may be normal) and the need for DNS.

OK it's working as is, but I'd really like to know WHY I have to use the DNS settings now.......it bugs me. Had another attempt with them back on auto and nope, no web pages....

1110708 2010-06-16 21:09:00 I went to Red Network two weeks ago and put DNS into modem only. TCP/IP is still on automatic. And we haven't noticed any difference in the phone ring. coldot (6847)
1110709 2010-06-16 22:39:00 This is driving me crazy. I want tyo know WHY this is necessary since they swapped me.
I cannot ask Vodafone because no matter who or where I ring they transfer me to the Call Centre tech support lot who persist in going on about how to enter the server settings. No-One can explain to me WHY.

I go round and round in circles.

1110710 2010-06-17 00:20:00 What DNS servers are you pointing to?.... SolMiester (139)
1110711 2010-06-17 00:36:00 Who were you with before? It is possible your previous provider provided your modem with dns addresses.
I'm assuming your computer is getting its IP via dhcp?
If your modem gets its dns settings from the isp, and your computer gets its ip via DNS, the modem should provide the computer with itself as the dns server.
Or is your modem strictly a modem and not a router?
