1111412 2010-06-21 01:48:00 Have you tried powering off your PC. Plug the drive in and powerup and reboot?

I had one that refused to operate until I did that.

Will try this when I get home, am at course at the moment.

Whats the hdd? SATA or IDE?? If its SATA 2 and the gf's PC has only got SATA 1, switch the switch / jumper on the hdd to SATA 1 / 150, then it'll work

Haven't checked as it's just connected through USB, but will check the BIOS when I get home also, another thing to note, gf's computer is a laptop :(

1111413 2010-06-21 01:54:00 could be- going faulty -partition lost ??
- may be you need to assign a differnt drive letter to it (Ie not D:)
- may have some drive encryption or drive compression

- could try veiwing it in Linux:tends to be less fussy than Win
(but if you could use Lin, I guess you wouldnt be asking here :punk )

If its not yours, honestly I would give it back rather than possibly mess it up
for the person who owns it

ahh. the vital extra info.

treat it like a data recovery then :devil
Im sure its allreay been suggested but..
remove the drive from the case, you may have to break it open :badpc:
connect directly to PC as 2nd drive
run some data recovery software across it (sorry dont know any good free ones)
listen for clunking noises (bad noises)
put it in the freezer for a few hours= try this LAST
Try and access it with a Linux Live CD. Sometimes works when Win decides not to recognise a damaged partion/hd.

1111416 2010-06-21 02:33:00 Just re read. It's likely your CD/DVD drive is already D: drive unless you gave it a different drive letter.

And you say that the USB drive shows up as D:
