I have one that's been running under the bark in the garden, and under a driveway in a pipe, pretty sure the pipe is full with water, have had no issues at all, still runs at gigabit speeds. :p
That's probably why it runs so well - the extra shielding from a (metal?) pipe filled with slightly dirty (i.e. conductive) water has got to be good for it! :) |

I asked a mate who's a structured cabling tech, and he said you can get outdoor-rated UTP that has an extra layer of sheathing around the outside that is more UV stable; it's a little dearer, but you don't have to worry about using conduit. |

I recall seeing some gel-filled Cat5e cable a number of years ago, which was designed for outdoor use - not too sure who sold it though. |
