2010-06-17 01:21:00 | Hi, Couldn't find any relevant situations in the Forum. Also searched the downloads site but couldn't figure out which updates are needed in the EZ Flash scenario and where to start. So, with my limited knowledge and experience despite SolMeister, Gary and Speedy backing up, I thought it was better to stop here. So put all back to only two partitions as accepted by the mobo. However, I wish to follow this up to get it right at some stage. Thanks to you all.

2010-06-17 01:45:00 | I would send an email to WD. And ask the same ? See what they say | Speedy Gonzales (78) | |
2010-06-17 06:19:00 | That's the most wise and practical advice I could ever have. Very much obliged Speedy. May be, it would pay if I sent a similar one to Seagate as well as it had ended up in the same issue twice just before WD. I'll keep you all posted. Thanks Speedy. | namboothiri (14469) | |
2010-06-19 02:43:00 | Progress if not Success at last: Hi, WD hasn't replied yet to my email sent on 17th. But I was still hanging on to the notion we had that the problem was more likely with the I/O in the mobo and also a personal feeling that there could be something wrong that I was doing. So had a decent read about partitions at pcguide.com. I also had a detailed read of the process EASEUS had given on the subject. One thing noticed was the use of Right Click and the Task Pane in their Guide instead of going directly to the icons on the Menu bar. Following this, I discarded diskmgmnt utility and began partitioning with EASEUS. Did a Primary, then two Logic. However, EASEUS froze to the 4th. So ended the process and started formatting the 4th to FAT32 and then completed the partition. It worked! That's 3 NTFS and 1 FAT32. Then I shrinked the C drive where the OS is and pulled out more than 160GB free. Although this appeared to be impossible before with EASEUS, this time the whole action was completed in less than 30 minutes! Nevertheless, I'm still lost in the wilderness as to the resons that stopped/froze the process earlier. Was it due to partitionhing all the 3 or 4 into Primary only? Or was it due to not clicking on the action spots as directed in the Guide avoiding the Menu bar? I don't know. But the truth reamins that the problem is solved! Thanks to you all for the encouragement, support and to be confident.

2010-06-19 03:04:00 | Check the manual, to see WHAT SATA ports SATA hdds and cd's/DVD's should be plugged into. On some mobos, the SATA ports are either for hdd's or dvd's. Your hdd maybe plugged into the wrong SATA port? Like this mobo, if I'm using IDE mode (I'm not, I'm using AHCI the hdd HAS to be plugged into port 1/2, according to the manual). Its plugged into SATA port #3. Why I have no idea. And you wouldnt really know this (unless you read the manual), since all the SATA ports are red

2010-06-19 04:37:00 | Thanks Speedy . Sure, will read it and see if there is any mandatory directives to adhere to . As said, the mobo also has 2 IDE ports . I suppose, all the SATA (supports 3GB/s) ports are for HDDs . Since I had an old 40GB IDE HD and CD/DVD drive, I had plugged both of them in to it . When I had a new SATA DVD/CD drive, I used the SATA port along with the C drive . Now, I've removed both IDE gadgets and the 3 SATA ports are currently being used by the 2HDs and CD/DVD drive . They are in the order of 1 and 2 for HDDs and 3rd for CD/DVD . I've seen that the IDE ports are listed first in the BIOS as Master/Slave and then comes the SATA 1 to 4 . May be, the removal of IDE drives might have had a bearing in the data layout of the mobo . Will look closely .

2010-06-20 00:39:00 | Hi Speedy I had a close scrutiny of the general/BIOS instructions in the Manual . The 4 SATA ports are allocated for HDDs (are RAID capable) & Optical DDs but for plugging in, not said which to which . So we may assume that numberical order than random should do which we have done . Regarding IDE ports they are for UDMA up to 133 . At present, however, we don't have to worry as they aren't in use . One thing I picked up is that of Manual mentioning Windows 2000 and XP but not Vista . When I had this from C1 Shopping Mall about 3-4 years ago, it was listed as Vista64 ready . May be, it is true but they might have shipped an old version Manual . But I've to say that with the current configurations, the PC is OK and thanks to your good heart and of all others .

2010-06-20 00:52:00 | It should be alright with vista. There are drivers for it (for 32 and 64 bit vista) on the ASUS site. Umm since this is a Nvidia based motherboard, you didnt install the Nvidia firewall did you? This can cause probs. I wouldnt be surprised (If Nvidia firewall is installed), that its causing these I/O errors And since this is an Nforce 430 based mobo, This may also apply (en.wikipedia.org) Nvidia's nForce4 chipset suffers from several unresolved issues. The ActiveArmor hardware firewall is nearly non-functional, with many unsolved bugs and potentially serious instability issues. Installing ActiveArmor can cause BSODs for users of certain software, especially peer-to-peer file sharing applications. Some programs, such as μTorrent, go so far as to have warning messages about using Nvidia's firewall in combination with their software. ActiveArmor also has a high probability of causing corruption of file downloads. Nvidia has been unable to solve these issues and points to hardware bugs within the chipset itself, problems which they are unable to work around. There have also been data corruption issues associated with certain SATA 3 Gbit/s hard drives. The issues can often be resolved with a firmware update for the hard drive from the manufacturer. The nForce4 chipset has also been blamed for issues with PCI cards, relating to Nvidia's implementation of the PCI bus. RME Audio, a maker of professional audio equipment, has stated that the latency of the PCI bus is unreliable and that the chipset's PCI Express interface can "hog" system data transfer resources when intense video card usage is occurring. This has the effect of causing audible pops and clicks with PCI sound cards.[7] Gamers have noticed this effect, especially with Creative's Sound Blaster X-Fi and Sound Blaster Audigy 2 sound cards. Compatibility issues between these sound cards and nForce4 motherboards have been ongoing, even following driver updates.[8] Latency issues are more readily apparent with sound cards than other addon cards because of the direct user feedback the audio problems demonstrate. Gigabit (1000 Mbps) ethernet support in Vista and Windows 7 is also problematic with nForce4. The latest drivers fall back to 100 Mbps mode, and there is no known fix for the problem. Nvidia offers chipset driver downloads for nForce4 for Windows versions up to and including Vista in the "Legacy" product type category on their download page.[9] However, there is no official support for Windows 7.

2010-06-20 03:12:00 | It appears, we don't have to go too far to see why all these are happening? Speedy thanks for your analytical and detailed info . I never had NVidea Firewall installed . The only reason I went for ASUS (even now with the new Laptop) was for their hands-on involvement in the industry but no surprise, they don't make every bit of it . And even if they did, things can still go wrong for so many reasons . But I've to say except for this expansions and issues, the mobo proved reliable and has worked well to date . Interestingly enough, both Creative sound cards you noted worked well in this and now I use only 2ZS . I think, we can rest the case here and look for a change say, an upgrade or build a reasonably reliable (seemingly!) unit . As I'm not a gamer it would be worth looking for some lighter options later .

2010-06-20 03:15:00 | ASUS mobos are OK, I'm using 2 soon to be 3 here. Its the chipset / the drivers on yours that maybe the prob | Speedy Gonzales (78) | |
