1110501 2010-06-16 07:41:00 Depends weather it's hanging on startup or just when executing tasks. If it's hanging while booting then usually you suspect overheating.

That is not what he described, and unless it was hard resetting or crashing then heat would not be considered to a be possible cause.

The hardware does not slow down when it over heats, it fails.

1110502 2010-06-16 08:16:00 I had a problem with an old notebook running a cracked version of XP that I was asked to have a look at. It fully took 25 minutes to start up. When I reinstalled it using another copy of XP, it took less than two minutes. And it was running on an AMD k6.
Could just be something the technicians buggered up when they reinstalled, or it could be that a piece of hardware you are running does not have the drivers correctly installed, or installed at all.

1110503 2010-06-16 08:35:00 Depends what you mean by cracked. If something is infected, well yer then it may cause it to be slow. Whats the mobo?? Does XP let you change the amount of CPU's in msconfig, like Vista / Win7?? I cant remember Speedy Gonzales (78)
1110504 2010-06-16 08:42:00 yes, i believe it does. i can't recall where i saw the article for it though. But it is possible to do that somewhere. 8ftmetalhaed (14526)

Nope, and if it has wrongly detected the amount of cpu's/cores then it requires a clean install. Just fire up the system monitor window and it displays how many cpu's are running.

But I doubt that is the issue.

1110506 2010-06-16 08:59:00 That wont make it go any faster in windows, but it may reduce the boot time, if that takes ages Speedy Gonzales (78)
1110507 2010-06-16 09:01:00 Every time you give it a command of any kind, there is a perceptible pause before it does what you ask. This applies to every operation on files and apps.
Can anyone explain what is wrong with this machine.
The computer takes about 10 minutes to load up, and a very long time to shut down.

Either your system resources are low due to a poor configuration/malicious software or you have driver issues.

Your other consideration is a bad install of the OS or a faulty harddrive, but go through your other options first.

Takes 3 minutes to disable everything under startup, reboot the computer and ascertain if shes running better.

1110508 2010-06-16 09:02:00 If he can post a HJT or reply this year, we maybe able to find out whats on the system. Unless something is running in PIO mode, then it'll be slow as Speedy Gonzales (78)
