| 818969 | 2009-10-11 00:30:00 | The real pseudoephedrine works best. Mind you it always confuses me that pseudoephedrine is the real stuff, even though it is named as if it's 'fake (pseudo (dictionary.reference.com)) ephedrine'.... Surely ephedrine would be even more effective??? The word pseudoephedrine is used is because the chemical structure differs from ephedrine by only a carbon atom, I believe. |

My understanding is that the molecular structure of ephedrine vs pseudoephedrine is almost an exact mirror, and the body is unable to tell the difference. Sudafed in particular to my knowledge has been around for 40 years in use as a substitute for methamphetamine. Possible alternatives include scotch and honey. But if honey has a headache, however ... |

| 818971 | 2009-10-11 08:28:00 | As has been stated earlier, and I can confirm based on the last 20+ years, non-pseudoephedrine products are an absolute waste of time and money for some people with sinus problems. I've never used the products for a cold or a flu, but I am yet to find a substitute for fixing problems associated with blocked sinuses. Any expert who says otherwise is more than welcome to drop off some free samples at my house any day - but I'm still sceptical after trying other products that are 'just like it' (they're not) or 'just as good' (they're rubbish). Might as well take a lolly or spray water up your nose...... Andrew P.S blocked sinuses are not the same thing as a blocked nose - if you're not sure, then the pain in your head when bending forward will tell you.... |

Reminds me of companies that promote their products as 'sugar free', but they actually contain 'invert sugars' which have a mirror image molecular structure, taste like sugar and everything else, but are not technically 'sugar'. |
