| 818903 | 2009-10-10 06:23:00 | The Rutherford involvement is probably just a local variation on this oft told story :) Niels Bohr was a student in Denmark and went to Copengagen University. He didn't go to Rutherfords laboratory until 1912 when he already held a doctorate, so he wouldn't have been answering a first year question in elementary physics to Rutherford :banana I don't know if the basis of the story has any truth, or whether it is urban legend. I just looked up Allen and Maxwell, A Text Book of Heat Part 1, which we used in the 6th/7th forms, I remember being set this question: "Calculate the height of an aeroplane if the pressure recorded is 990 millibars, the pressure at the earths surface is 1016 millibars, and the temperature of the air is 17C" |

The trick is that they do it with a straight face on their dial. No wonder they confuse their millibars with hectopascals. |
