Is power consumption an issue, cause an LE 1250 would be better for running WHS. Its not a dual core but uses much less power than the CPU in your 1st post, but it should be fine for your needs.

818009 2009-10-08 19:21:00 hmmm just thinking, would it work alright to just plug an external HDD into the main PC and just share it across the network? It would be alot cheaper... xyz823 (13649)

Yes, you could do that. Even run WHS in the VM and use that:p

That's my current setup at the moment. Well was.

I was running a RAID0 for my use on the machine. And a 500gb hard drive for backup/media. And it's worked well enough for me. I'm sharing files and and media to 3 laptops, and two PS3s (to watch everything on two HDTVs), and it worked just fine.

It depends on your needs.
I would prefer to retire my desktop into a permanent server, but my budget prevents me from building a new machine.

thats a good idea, so I just install WHS into a VM on the desktop?

Also is ubuntu server edition better or worse than WHS? I just want to justify spending another few hundred $$$ if ubuntu is just as good.

Ubuntu Server has not GUI.

Unless you've had previous experience with linux, you'll find setting it up for what you want will require a lot more work that running WHS.

Try Amahi (http://www.amahi.org/) if you're after a linux based home server.

But when it comes to simplicity and variety of "addins", you just can't beat WHS:)

They also have a very large active community, so help will be a click away:)

818014 2009-10-09 03:09:00 Another option is to buy a cheap ex-lease PC and chuck some new hard drives in it. A few years back I was running a trial version of WHS on a small ex-lease box I bought off george12, and it worked great. Nowadays I have a linux-based home server running on a more recent ex-lease box I bought for around $150. Since you don't really need much CPU power, or a flash case, or anything like that for a server, there is no real point buying new. somebody (208)
818015 2009-10-09 03:29:00 A few years ago, I had an old 1.6mhz machine, and with advice from my son, I installed a non-gui version of Debian on it and set it up with "Filezilla" (that is transfer of files etc. for backup).
I discovered a utility called "sftpDrive", which worked a treat - just like having the directories on the server, on windows. It was easy to setup and easy to administer. I also used PuTTY, which meant using the linux command line occasionally. If I could do that, anyone can:lol:
I don't have a lot of space in this office, so last year I retired it in favour of a Synology 108j (much more compact, sits on my desktop). And because it uses a linux operating system, I can still get my command line fix........very occasionally.
