1111226 2010-06-17 23:08:00 Ok, here goes. :help:

I run 2 Gmail accounts, one for work and one for home. To allow me to use various e-mail addresses I set Gmail up to use the SMTP server at Slingshot using my account and password there. This avoids the unprofessional and confusing "sent on behalf" header on the e-mails. It's worked fine for 4 - 6 months and was working until 10:00am Wednesday night.
Now with no changes on my part (I was asleep), on Thursday morning Gmail reported: "Authentication failed. Please check your username/password.
[Server response: 535 #5.7.0 Authentication failed code(535) ]

I can log into the Slingshot Webmail using the same passwords with no problem but Gmail can't.
I've select Port 25 and SSL is unchecked as per their recommended settings.

Any ideas??

1111227 2010-06-17 23:19:00 What email client are you using and what is your current smtp settings? ronyville (10611)
1111228 2010-06-17 23:24:00 I'm using outlook 2003 on one machine and Thunderbird 3.? on 2 others - all using IMAP protocol. dagwood (15837)
1111229 2010-06-17 23:26:00 Oh and the outgoing server points to smtp.gmail.com. From this point I understand Gmail is meant to direct it to the smtp server at slingshot, verify that I have an account and then slingshot sends it out. dagwood (15837)
1111230 2010-06-17 23:33:00 There was a thread (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) on this a few days ago.. try this (www.imagef1.net.nz) settings for thunderbird. Change your smtp settings from gmail to slingshot as in the picture.. see if that helps. ronyville (10611)
1111231 2010-06-17 23:44:00 Yep, I'm using:

smtp.slingshot.co.nz
port 25
SSL box is unchecked

Gmail insists I enter a user name and password which I use the same info I use to log into Slingshots webmail. I've tried both including and excluding the section after the @ to see if it makes a difference - nup!

Frustrating bit is this is all off my machine so I can't understand why I'm the only one having the issue with all the squillion gmail users out there.

I've also tried using the Telecom SMTP server using the work account details - no joy.

1111232 2010-06-17 23:59:00 Ok.. I have slingshot at home so will try a gmail account in thunderbird when I get home, will see if i can make it work. ronyville (10611)
1111233 2010-06-18 00:04:00 Really appreciate your help - many thanks! dagwood (15837)
1111234 2010-06-18 10:57:00 Using thunderbird i have tested both gmail smtp here (www.imagef1.net.nz) and slingshot smtp here (www.imagef1.net.nz) and they seem to work fine. I was able to send emails from my gmail account to my work email address using both smtp settings. ronyville (10611)
1111235 2010-06-18 20:06:00 Thanks for this. Perhaps a bit cheeky of me but could I ask you to try using the gmail webmail interface to set up a new e-mail address and use the option to utilise Slingshot's SMTP servers.
At the risk of telling you how to "suck eggs":

Settings
Accounts and Import
Send mail from another address
Send through **address domain** SMTP servers (recommended for professional domains – Learn more)
Here I've entered the smtp.slingshot.co.nz, port 25, account and password details and left the SSL box unchecked.

I get "Authentication failed. Please check your username/password.
[Server response: 535 #5.7.0 Authentication failed code(535) ]"
