1111038 2010-06-17 10:21:00 I got a new Gateway Laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium on it but I have never been able to just drag and drop and move photos or any documents around within the same folder. So I cant put my photos in order which is real frustrating. Im set as the administrator but is there some other permission somewhere i have to set so i can move photos around?
Thanks

1111039 2010-06-17 10:27:00 Photos and Docs are sorted by Name or Extension. There is a program which can batch rename photos based on the date and time taken so if you want them in that order I will look up the details of the application.

It's the fourth one on this page and is freeware:-

Hope this helps and welcome to PressF1.

1111040 2010-06-17 13:34:00 Apparently the possibility of arranging files out of order has been designed out of Windows 7, the files will auto arrange no matter what you do and cant be turned off :horrified

(From one of the posts)

We've spoken with the Microsoft Technical Research department. After speaking with technical support for hours, we finally got hold of somebody who knew what they were talking about, and it's official.

The feature providing the ability to disable auto-arrange has officially been removed. Microsoft's justification is that not enough people used it, so they removed the feature. Also, the research tech spent several hours on his own trying all sorts of various work-arounds, including registry hacks, and concluded that none of them would actually work.

So, with this definitive answer, I am officially pissed off. The only way I think this will ever be fixed is to launch a barrage of tech support calls complaining about this. The problem is, as knowledgeable as this tech was, this issue wasn't even on his radar. As long as Windows 7 has been available to the public (including the beta releases), this was the first time he had heard it was a problem.

So, the solution... call them and complain! That's the ONLY way this will ever have a chance at being fixed (this is per the tech, by the way, not just me). Start calling. They need the numbers.

1111041 2010-06-18 02:28:00 Wow I never realised that Microsoft actually deleted the ability to turn off the auto arrange. I cant believe they thought it wasnt necassary. Looks like im not the only annoyed person out there going off that thread. Thanks for letting me know snowmelt (15834)

I have noticed this as well and am annoyed that I can't drag around my files within a folder. This is just one other reason why I'm finding Windows 7 no better than Vista, in many respects. Also I.E 8 also seems slower in rendering web pages compared with Vista.

:annoyed:
