So... I called a PC tech this morning because i was having trouble installing an OS on my new drive. I told him beforehand that my DVD drive isn't working properly.

When he came he told me the dvdrom is meant to be set to 'select' and HDD to 'master'. It failed to boot, so he changed the dvdrom to 'slave' - still failed. He tried his IDE and sata hard drive and still failed to boot.

After an hour and a half fiddling around with the settings in BIOS and the jumpers on both components he came to a conclusion that the hard drive is broken. He charged me $145, and left me with an unworking system. I am extremely pissed off, not only did he charge me a lot for just telling me the hdd is faulty, and wasted 2hrs of my time, he also broke my dvdrom and my OS disk is stuck in there (lucky its only a backup or else i would have lost an additional $199).

Any1 had any bad experiences before?

Doesnt work, power isn't going through the drive (no led lights)

Gary's suggestion is to manually open it - it doesn't require power. The best way is to use a paperclip, stick it in the hole and push (it requires a bit of force). It will "unlatch" the tray and open it.

817763 2009-10-07 08:27:00 I did years ago with an Acer. It spent more time at Acer than here lol. I didnt pay for it tho, it was still under warranty. In the end I biffed it, and thats when I decided to build my own. And never buy anything from Acer again lol Speedy Gonzales (78)
817764 2009-10-07 08:32:00 If what you said is true. You would be CRAZY if you paid his $145 Fee. Refuse too. Tell him you were not happy with the service and that you are willing to take the matter further if he objects.

I understand that not everyone offers a no fix no fee, so you may fell compelled to give him something but to pay that amount is not right.

Sounds like a cowboy to me
