| 1453580 | 2018-09-13 21:21:00 | I am planning a holiday trip to Singapore/Hongkong/Hainan,China in late December. Is Travel Insurance necessary? I know, it's good to have but got to spend a few more hundred dollars. Do you frequent travelers always take up such Insurance? Your views, please. |

| 1453581 | 2018-09-13 21:45:00 | Absolutely essential to have travel insurance. A couple of years ago my good friend and I booked to go to Scotland and Italy. Six months later she was diagnosed with bowel cancer ( and I was the one with some well controlled health issues - she had none). Three months later she was dead. So yes - Travel Insurance is an essential. And I had to fight to get my money back. |

The irony is that you hope that the insurance company wins its bet and you lose. Having insurance is nevertheless the prudent way to go. It might be an anoyance to lose your luggage but becoming ill for any reason could well be a complete personal financial disaster. |

I know, it's good to have but got to spend a few more hundred dollars. Do you frequent travelers always take up such Insurance? Your views, please. This is something you need to weigh up very carefully. First rule for me is: Do they have reciprocal hospital care with NZ? I would say no in your case, but you still need to check. The cost of Hospital care in some countries is horrendous. Next consideration is: Do you have any existing health conditions? The Insurance Company hopes you say no and pay the lower premium. That way they can walk away when they seek your Medical Records and find you have. If you declare everything you will probably find the premium is horrific but getting quotes is worthwhile and an interesting exercise. Dont forget to check the Excesses when doing your sums. I had a case where Customs didnt put some perfectly legitimate pills back in my bag so I went to a Chemist (Australia) who couldnt help without a prescription so off to the local Doctor. No problem, $70 later off back to the Chemist and another $70 later we have the pills. Ok, I had insurance so put in a claim when I got home for the Doctors & Chemists fees, only to be told that it didnt come under my medical insurance it was lost property and there was a $100 excess on lost property. Then there was a mate of mine who is as fit as a buck rat and twice as dangerous, who travelled to Australia for a look around. He didnt bother with any insurance as if he became seriously ill and needed Hospital treatment it would be free under our reciprocal arrangements and NZ is only 3hrs away if he needed any other care. What he didnt count on was having a road accident and winding up in hospital. No problem, the rental car was covered and he was treated and discharged from hospital in a couple of days, but what wasnt covered was the $800 ride in the Ambulance. As for lost baggage Ive always calculated that I could buy a new Suitcase and wardrobe with the Insurance Premium. Just dont take Gold or Diamonds. :) Safe Travel. |

Thats what happened in the recent Bali case mentioned above . She had insurance . Insurance wouldnt cover her costs . www.radionz.co.nz |
