1453149 2018-08-30 20:28:00 Well new old car.
I was going to buy after the move, but more choice up here.

Thinking of these 2 perhaps?

Husband wants a hatch.
I want seats that you don't have to climb out of like current Corolla, they tilt back, so you sink down...

No 4WD or AWD.

Auto only.

Budget is $7K max sadly.

Although will sell current car, but be lucky if I get $1500. It's fine mechanically, 208000km but scruffy and a 1996....:-(

Any thoughts?
We like reliable over pretty and features.

1453150 2018-08-30 20:36:00 Don't buy a car from a place called "Cut Price" anything. Especially in (lol) Otahuhu.

Harriett sounds like a safe name. Reliable. Harriett sounds like she'd be there if something went wrong.

1453151 2018-08-30 20:53:00 I like Toyota's but that Honda looks very nice. Bryan (147)
1453152 2018-08-30 21:11:00 Have you looked at a Suzuki SX4. wratterus (105)
1453153 2018-08-30 22:13:00 Go with what you know. Saying that, there is a Toyota 1.8 motor that is known to chew the oil. Something to do with the rings. Toyota fixes the issue, doesn’t seem to be the motor on any NZ new Toyota’s only a few imports around 2008. plod (107)
1453154 2018-08-30 22:52:00 I just bought a 2nd car - a Nissan Tiida hatch. But did not want to trade my Odyssey - letting it "retire". Not ready to part with it. Used occasionally. I plan to also get a Toyota Wish, but gravitating to big SUV But review (www.trademe.co.nz) (Trademe) says to avoid the 2 litre - requires premium fuel. I think I read elsewhere the valves carboned up for that car.

Honda you chose - may have timing belt. You could consider a big (build height) but small (engine size)l SUV crossover (e.g. Nissan Dualis/Juke or Mazda CX series - but more pricey - being more sporty) if that suits. I also researched the car yards and generally found are cheaper out West and city fringe - but yards were small compared to South.

>> So visiting a large car yard (Budget Cars, U-Sell, ect) you get to see a vast range - and possibly more staff knowledgeable for certain makes of cars. I was "sold" (good ex mechanic salesman who also owned a Tiida) on my current car compared to what I wanted (a poky boxy Toyota)...So did my daughter for her car....and one of her mates. More appealing when you see hundreds of cars jammed together. They had over 500 cars - much more than they could timely fit on their website. Sure prices are more variable per make and slightly higher than many smaller yards. But Budget include band expander, WOF check when sold, and service. Then new plates. May pay to ask what engine oil/fluids are used, and service intervals. CVT's I believe require their own type of fluid - more so than engine oil.

>>> I also discovered their are a network of finance companies that large car yards work with. Up to four tiers. Top tiers has the best deals (around 15% - I seen the paperwork for daughter's car). Lower tiers tend to be more flexible or more forgiving - but around 30 percent interest - but require house visits for asset assessment. I used another sound working car of mine for asset.

"Auto" also means "CVT-Auto" -many of which can be sensitive to heavy loads uphill, generally for smaller engines - which seem to be common on small hatchbacks. So ask about if truely automatic (5 or 6 stage transmission or CVT). CVT's need more care I think, and correct fluids though - but often feel no shiting - and seem to take off faster, e.g. when stopped at lights.

1453155 2018-08-30 23:17:00 I have a (possibly irrational) dislike of Suzuki.

Nissan, it's on the OK list.
So is Kia but it's beyond my budget so forget it.

No cars starting with the letter M.

(And son, in a fit of insanity is buying a Mercedes - idiot, but his choice, he'll learn the hard way)

car dealers, well yes, I dislike them too, they're all liars and I wouldn't ask them to recommend anything. They all want to flog the one they want to get rid of.
I don't need finance and would never do that anyway. I sold the house remember, settlement is today.

It will be the last car I buy.

I don't care about power, within reason, no 1300cc......current one is 1500cc, a bit slow on takeoff but that doesn't bother me.

I had an 850cc car once. It was fun....if gutless.
But sticking with between 1500 and 2000,

1453156 2018-08-31 00:06:00 You have selected MPVs. Is that because of moving gears around? I unexpectedly found my Odyssey was good for that. Could fit big and long items easily like washing machines and large tallboys. You might want to find out about seating configurations. Third row seats may fold flat and level with middle seats. Some don't - but might have below storage. Some 2nd row seats can fold and sit vertically - useful for transporting large bikes. Also if lifting/sliding items out from rear - some bumpers are higher than others - making it a bit tricky, or their might be restrictions - because of prominent inner rear wheel arches. kahawai chaser (3545)
1453157 2018-08-31 00:10:00 I've just bought a Toyota Blade (an upgrade of the Corolla). It has a 2.4 motor and it is delightful. Bryan (147)

was it a mini ?

It could be worth a visit to the Dog & Lemon website, just to check for possible issues to look out for on whatever you decide

This YT channel is worth a look. Its US, similar cars different names . Some VTEC info in this vid :avoid mazda it seems :-) And he doesnt recommend Nissan anymore as their quality isnt what it used to be.
