1452834 2018-08-18 21:17:00 Nice, though I'm unsure what the wire "fence" is blocking off and protecting?

The last time I was there about 4 years ago there were no fences so I assume that people have been driving into the waters edge as the fence also goes around the side to where the beaches are that we used to launch boats from.

Thanks Kenj they are cellphone pics as I didn't have my normal camera with me

1452835 2018-08-22 11:22:00 The drive over Arthurs Pass has got a lot safer since they put the viaduct in. I remember pulling into a rest stop at the top of the pass and having your car attacked by the friendly keas.

One time a few decades ago there was snow on the pass. A friendly policeman was there to greet us at the bottom. We were given the choice to either turn back or follow him up to the top. We travelled up on the right-hand side of the road in convoy with our right hand wheels in the right-hand gutter. On the left where we should have travelled there were was a shear drop over the side. I was happy to get to Greymouth safely.
