1451069 2018-06-30 08:53:00 Do these work? Meaning not the ones with a box in the cable.

Someone asked me if I had one and I don't. Got me thinking. With my 2009 PCI-X video card by ASUS they provided a DVI to VGA for me - it worked for me. DVI is digital and VGA is analogue I know. Is this because the video card is doing the conversion?

I was using a computer monitor. Or would a computer monitor be different to a HDMI TV?

Cheers.

1451070 2018-06-30 09:38:00 HDMI is DVI with sound.

Video card is not doing any conversion, the adapter is.

No difference with monitor or TV. They understand the HDMI specification.

1451071 2018-06-30 10:11:00 This little converter is a little wee thing. I heard others say you need a cord with a box in it like this ...

1451072 2018-06-30 10:24:00 You need the box, that's the convertor, the HDMI cord is just a short extension to make it easier to connect but it could have been directly off the box too. It states 'with sound' but I don't see how that is possible as VGA doesn't have sound and I see no mini/audio jack output on it. So that is questionable. Kame (312)
1451073 2018-06-30 10:51:00 My Asus ATI card from 2009 is this and it worked. From the DVI out of the video card to my Dell screen via VGA.

1451075 2018-06-30 14:56:00 DVI has multiple versions, single link, dual link, Digital only, digital and analogue, it's not as simple as HDMI which is only digital.
Many DVI connectors are DVI-I which includes an analogue connection compatible with older VGA standards so your "adapter" was only converting the connector as the video card already had the output available on the DVI-I connector.

1451076 2018-06-30 23:08:00 If the basic converters does the job what are those larger units do that's different apart from the audio output?

Is it some devices like TV won't take analogue?

1451077 2018-06-30 23:19:00 Or is this specific to dvi? That carries a analogue connection. Nomad (952)
1451078 2018-07-01 03:20:00 I once tried to connect an older monitor (non-HDCP) with a DVI input, to a Blu-ray DVD player. With the appropriate HDMI to DVI cable. But it didn't work. I gather the DVD player will not output anything on its HDMI connector unless it senses an HDCP capable monitor.

Does this $48 device we are discussing have the HDCP capability, do you think?
