1450823 2018-06-21 22:40:00 I am building a new PC (see my new case thread)

It is for my home office, and I wont be doing any gaming, just Office, Internet, watching Youtube and email etc.

There seems to be so many version of Windows 10
I will be getting a 64 bit version, but
Are there any advantages in getting Windows 10 Professional over Home?

1450824 2018-06-21 23:11:00 Win Pro is just another way MS charges more for corporate's .
It gives you RDC, ability to join domain network, Group Policy and better control over Win updates .

You dont need it for home use . Only needed for business/corporate network connected PC's
Although the ability to delay Win Windates can be usefull.

1450825 2018-06-21 23:48:00 Stick with Home if you are paying full price.

And if you want really cheap just download and install windows 10 from MS media creation tool and skip the key - it'll run just fine un-activated.
Then if you want to activate it you can go to Ebay and buy a "Grey Market" key for $5-10 ish either home or pro - just match what you installed.

Slightly dodgy, but if it was outright illegal Ebay would block the sales. The sellers claim these keys are from faulty hardware but who knows. I will say if you buy one use it ASAP, peferably on the day you get it.
I've paid for a windows retail copy for most of my builds, but on a couple of old PCs with no OS I've done the above successfully.

1450826 2018-06-22 00:58:00 Yes Windows 10 seems to be very expensive these days.
From $160 to $340 for the different versions.
Still I suppose it is now a one off, once in your lifetime purchase (hopefully)
The Laptop manufacturers must get it much cheaper in volume etc.

So If you are 20 and planning to live till you are 70 that is about $3 a year or 6 cents a week. IMMIC.

Not really since its tied to the motherboard so each time you upgrade or buy a new laptop, new licence needed.

1450828 2018-06-22 07:44:00 Free installations of Windows 10 are supposed to be stopped, but in many cases it still activates on a clean install. Download an .iso file and give it a try before you spend any money. There are several ways of activating Windows OS, do a Google search. mzee (3324)

If you deactivate your old computer you will be able to transfer it to another one. Contact Microsoft.

1450830 2018-06-22 09:16:00 Yes I understand that if you have the full version ie not an OEM version you can deactivate W10 on your old motherboard and re-activate it on your new one, or even do it the other way round!
So you can own W10 for your lifetime (or Microsofts lifetime) Or until they change their mind.
