1451504 2018-07-13 05:31:00 I have received emails purporting to be from "Microsoft account team (account-security-noreply@accountprotection.microsoft.com)

Saying "Your password for the Microsoft account ma*****@snap.net.nz was changed on 7/12/2018 10:45PM (GMT)"

More details are given, and goes on:

If this wasn't you, your account has been compromised. Please follow these steps:

1 Reset your password.
2 Review your security info.
3 Learn how to make your account more secure.

You can also opt out.....
Thanks
The Microsoft account team.

Is this genuine or is a phishing scam?

You dont have to have a outlook.com / Live etc account. you can use what ever email provider you want when making up the account. I have one under my company name.

The email could be fake. The easiest way to be sure, log in how ever you normally would by going directly to MS and sign in as normal. Then change any security or passwords.

NEVER click on links in mails to sign in. the ONLY time you can (usually safely) is if you create an account someplace and they send you a confirmation right away.

Suspect all others as scams.

Precisely, the No 1 giveaway of a scam email.
What surprises me is the number of supposedly astute people who follow the links and get ripped off or robbed blind

Calling false on that comment.

As mentioned I have one MS account and used my own company name when creating it.

Several other people I know use their company names or ISP names, so while the mail may be fake you don't have to use outlook.com. MANY of my customers also use their Gmail address so the log in details ends with @gmail.com

The thing a lot of people refer to is email accounts. BUT that's not whats asked.
Microsoft account Which Microsoft account ???

If its One Drive for example, STILL a Microsoft account you can use what ever you want. ( including snap)

could be
- a scam . The 'from account-security-noreply@accountprotection.microsoft.com' may be spoofed.
- genuine notification that someone is trying to get access to your MS a/c

dont reply to that email.
Login to MS , reset your pass to something very secure .
