1112199 2010-06-21 21:16:00 Ok, my boss's computer system crashed the other day, and he lost some information that was handy do him (info backed up, on the same HDD). Just wondering if anyone in f1 know about data recovery within NZ, what's it cost, does it work etc? Apparently the HDDs crashed because they were in a RAID setup.

As for my second thing, I've got an external HDD (western digital mybook) and every now and then it acts as if its' getting plugged in again (sound (dndn) and screen saying "What do you want to do, burn disk, open folder bla bla bla"). Just wondering what this is? I'm 99% sure it's not the power being bumped.

1112200 2010-06-21 21:23:00 sure someone will advise you of someone in the know how ..
you may want to do a search on this site. prices was about one or two grand I think ....

nothing wrong with that thing asking what you wanna do - std stuff. just press cancel or disable if possible and open my explorer to use it if you prefer. the same thing happen when you pop in a CD or DVD.

raid is not backup. assuming you mean raid 1, it is only for hardware failure and you want no down time, for a business, you need it to work when one hdd goes bad and the other takes over. however if u overwrite or delete a file or the drive gets corrupted, it will be copied over to the other so both get stuffed. if windows get stuffed up for any reason does not boot - the other drive you guessed it will be the same.

there is also raid 0 which can provide faster speeds however if one fails the other goes as well, 2 becomes half siblings for any reason. even if one hdd is good and the other is bad, both will go down.

the best backup is to backup onto a another hdd. as you witnessed when they are backed up to the same hdd - when the physical drive goes bad - it's ........

the typical use of raid 1 - arrive into work one day, a hdd dies, the other takes over. assuming everything else is hunkey dorey your system will start up like normal and you can do your job without delay (and to your customers). get a new hdd and put it in and the system will automatically image creating you that 2nd layer protection.

but if a file was overwritten, corrupted, windows go bad -raid 1's job is to mirror copying everything over to the other hdd. if crap has gone, crap will be copied. 1x bad hdd becomes 2x bad hdd.

ideally you want 1x good hdd becomes 2x good hdd.

1112202 2010-06-21 21:39:00 Cheers! Na I mean My external has been plugged into my computer, for hours and hours before - then it suddenly acts as if I've just plugged it in.

From what I can tell, it was raid0, he was explaining how his system goes faster but is more likely to crash and burn.

What's the success rate of this recovery? He'd pay 1-2grand for his data back. Do they take it, see what they can get, then offer you to get it back or what?

1112203 2010-06-21 21:43:00 dunno, u need to ask them for an assessment. by looking at the link again it might cost up to 3g or something. you need to check with the shops. yeah they will have to physically see the drive

dunno about the hdd if it's been in for hrs then ...
i think best practice of backup hdd is not to be used constantly unless the primary files are there. backup hard drives are to be used now and then disconnected. u want minimal wear and tear.

We have used those guys in the past, last time we got a hdd recovered it was around the $700 mark, but playing with a RAID0 setup may be more. Good luck!

1112207 2010-06-22 01:49:00 Most data recovery places, look at the Drive(s), there is an inspection fee, of about $90 to see if they can recover the data - then they tell you what it will cost to have it recovered. Then its up to the person if they go ahead, or the company simply sends back the drive. wainuitech (129)
1112208 2010-06-22 02:05:00 The first thing to do regarding the array is to stop using same. The more some person frigs with it the less your chances of recovery. Sweep (90)
