1111618 2010-06-19 12:54:00 I've never had a network that just worked.

Generally what happen is that on the win7 taskbar a icon shows up saying "no internet access" until I open a webpage or check my pop email - then it goes away.

I just transferred a image file between the 2 computers.

Thru a router (cable):
Win7 couldn't even see itself (just my infrastructure router modem). Win2k could only see itself. Manually typing in the address or double clicking on the desktop shortcut didn't help. I have also tried restarting each computer and turn on and off the router to no avail.

Thru a direct ethernet cable:
Worked but they could only see each other. I had to manually type in the address. Then while it was copying the file they could suddently see each other. PS. I didn't change any settings.

Wireless:
I didn't use it on this occasion b/c 4GB would take too long but usually no probs. Occasionally I may not each each other but manually typing in the address usually fix that.

For internet access cable or wireless no issue at all. The issue seems to be the "local" ethernet (wired).

What gives?
On Monday I have access to a cable tester so I will test my cables.

1111619 2010-06-19 20:29:00 Win2K on the other PC here, had a similar prob. I think MS stuffed something up, with an update. I did a full update, on 2k. After that, it kept asking for a password every time I tried to copy something to Win7 on this (even tho I've disabled password protection in Win7). And I've disabled the password, in 2K as well (so you wont have to type one in before you get into Windows 2K).

It was fine till I rebooted Win2K. Then it started all over again. (I had to keep typing a password in even tho I had disabled it).

Then, I figured out, that the profile in Win2k was corrupt. So, I deleted it then created another. And it hasnt played up since. But I havent had to type in an address to copy something yet

yeah in the past i did copy some big files with a ethernet cable thru the router with no real probs. to me at least it takes a while to warm up and then it might work. or in my prev case just use a direct cable :p

fortunately i don't use it much. plus this old laptop is on its last leg. stuffed up lcd, one danged up usb port, half the keys don't have letterings on them and spacebar wonky and a right mouse button fell off :p

1111621 2010-06-20 00:26:00 Yup, think I'll format this other PC next mth (once or if there are any more updates for 2K). Since updates for 2K finish next mth. I'll have to buy some blank cd's first Speedy Gonzales (78)
