| 820608 | 2009-10-14 21:25:00 | Telecom are offering me a Thomson TG585 if I sign a 24 month plan with them. I need to upgrade anyway, so might as well do it. Right now I have a Dlink DSL-302G (piece of crap) modem and a Linksys WRT54G wireless router. I'm looking at port forwarding (using my local machine as a webserver), have a PS3, and 3 laptops and a desktop. Anything I should be aware of, or should I just sell my soul to the devil? I'm reasonably happy with Telecom, and I see no real reason to switch to anyone else at this stage. Any thoughts? |

Yeah the 302 is a piece of work, and even more crippled by Xtra's pathetic "secure" firmware. But the other option I have is a Thomson SpeedTouch 536 (with a 12 month contract), would this be a better option? So that's the dilemma. Should I just grab the modem and use my router? Or get the whole package? Either contract doesn't really bother me, so I ask. |

The only thing you would gain by only using the 24mth Thompson is a power saving from only having one router going. Wouldn't be much of a saving, but still... The 12mth Thompson will also work fine with the Linksys, but Telecom isn't likely to go arse over face in the next two years so you should be fine with a long contract. I'd go for the TG585 if it were me. |
