820382 2009-10-14 06:46:00 As a former (and hopefully future!) motorcyclist, I was appalled at the rego pricing they gave on the news. I appreciate that motorbikes are inherently more dangerous than cars, and that there are a lot of older guys hurting/killing themselves by taking up riding again, but in my experience, the vast majority of motorcycle injuries are caused by inattentive/moronic car drivers.

They don't heap levies on pedestrians that get bowled by a driver who didn't see the 'cross' sign, so how are motorcyclists that different?

820383 2009-10-14 06:51:00 If they bring that in I simply wont rego the bike.

$750 a year?,I think not.

And if I get hurt ACC will still have to pick up the bill.

Suckers.

The sliding scale of cost for engine size just shows they have no comprehension of what they are doing, No matter what their stats say there is no correlation between the size of the bike and the capabilities of the bike, or rider for that matter.

Plus they deliberately skew the numbers by having all bike related injuries counted against the registered bikes on our roads. How many farmers get killed a year in the hill country on their ATV's? How many ATV's are out there?,how much rego do they pay?...wat?...none?,hells bells, better hit the road bike owners in the pocket.

That aside, The most common injuries in NZ are sports injuries, I don't see them having to pay disproportionately more then everyone else, wait, they pay nothing.Damn, and ACC has managed to mismanage themselves into bankruptcy, wait, Lets charge road bike users $750...woohoo....cunning plan.

Bikes should be promoted as a more healthy form of transport and Bad riders should be picked up by the licensing and policing system rather then bikes getting legislated off the road.

These people are doing a **** job, and this just shows how lazy and stupid they are.

820384 2009-10-14 06:56:00 Did you see the guy on TV1 news who had four big bikes ..... that's a lot of additional moolah. Scouse (83)
820385 2009-10-14 07:03:00 but in my experience, the vast majority of motorcycle injuries are caused by inattentive/moronic car drivers.

My thoughts exactly. Apparently (have no source to back this claim up, but still) 85% of all accidents involving motorcyclists were the fault of somebody driving on 4 wheels... They should be paying more, not those on two wheels :(

820386 2009-10-14 07:09:00 The real stats show that the majority of motorcycle accidents causing injury are single vehicle accidents.

Rider error.

820387 2009-10-14 07:31:00 My thinking is that learners & small bikes up to 250, including those inherently unstable bean cans (scooters) should bear the brunt of the increases. People on bigger bikes in general have the skill to survive. Have you seen those idiots on scooters? They're just dying to die Phil B (648)
820388 2009-10-14 07:42:00 Keep 'em in the cycling lanes, the odds are better for both parties in the accidents. Either that, or make the registration / ACC charges equal to $2 per KmH of the attainable top speed.
I would make a profit on my attainable cycling speeds lately.

820389 2009-10-14 08:17:00 I just think they should either charge everyone a levy, or if they go down the road of charging extra for at risk groups then apply it across the board, If your in a group that costs more then pay up.

But that attacks the roots of the entire "no fault" system, They would have to start evaluating people on an individual basis, and that becomes regular old health/accident insurance.

So either tax the population and pool the damn money and hand it out as required, or tax everyone dependant on perceived risk, But not this bullshit of finding an easy target and ramping up the cost to fill up their spread sheets because THEY ****ed up their finances.
