Good idea if it can work and make a profit.

819704 2009-10-12 07:11:00 What will be very interesting is if they are somehow able to use the heat generated from those servers to heat houses, schools etc. Maybe some sort of heat exchanger, or building a datacentre next to a school and ducting the air from the datacentre directly into classrooms. somebody (208)
819705 2009-10-12 07:22:00 They have geothermal energy in Iceland anyway.

They don't need to every building has free geo thermal heating, that's for the whole country

819707 2009-10-12 08:51:00 Financing it could be a bit iffy. The only banks working there at the moment have a slot in the top for deposits I hear. R2x1 (4628)
819708 2009-10-12 10:11:00 Having a single "data hub" is a scary thing. Too reliant on one geographical location is a very scary thing. A terrorist attack or a natural disaster would cripple 80% of the world in one hit.
That is too much of a risk for mankind to take.

819709 2009-10-12 12:15:00 Along with what Cato said, Iceland is geographically too far for most countries to actually benefit from having servers located in Iceland. NZ for e.g. would start experiencing such high ping times that any savings would be rendered useless. beeswax34 (63)
819710 2009-10-12 18:15:00 I wouldn't trust Iceland after their banking fiasco. prefect (6291)
819711 2009-10-12 19:35:00 Maybe Air NZ can use them.. paulw (1826)
