820504 2009-10-14 11:12:00 How many tickets? :D

None that I am aware of.

In those days we had Traffic Cops for traffic 'management' (in my experience they were real P's ITA, anchors with a 'w') and Police for police work.

I think the country traffic cops went to bed early back then. :)

The thing that intrigues me about this story is that the guy went off the road three times. In a Lamborghini! And still managed a shade over 4 hours! They aren't cheap cars now, and they certainly weren't back then either. Hate to think of the damage done to the beautiful panel work...

820505 2009-10-14 11:48:00 Seriously, take SH2 then turn right onto SH27 to Tirau.

SH1 to Tokoroa, then SH 32 via west arm of Taupo to Turangi, then SH 1 to Wellington.

That way you avoid Hamilton, Cambridge and Taupo :)
Well, except for taking SH1 to the south side of the Bombay hill, I would agree 100%.

(Except that my car got whacked by a truck yesterday, so I won't be going too far for a day or 3. I am quite pleased I wasn't on a bike of any kind.)

820506 2009-10-14 18:06:00 Thanks guys. My current plan is to leave early in the morning, and make several stops along the way (for lunch etc.). somebody (208)
820507 2009-10-14 18:37:00 Last time I did it I got from Torbay (in rush hour traffic too) to Upper Hutt via Te Aro valley in just over 7 hours. You don't want to do it that fast. Allow 8 IMO, just in case it starts snowing or some silly thing. wratterus (105)

I would allow a bit over 9 hours for the trip.
Those who say they do it in 7 hours would have to average close to 100km/hr and to do that you have to be exceeding the speed limit for a lot of the way.

820509 2009-10-14 19:14:00 Its a bit like the bragging rights of Napier to Taupo. 1hr-30 at legal speeds.

Yes, you're onto it! Did it on one tank of petrol too, was very impressed. :p Worked out the average speed was around 96kph, and the car was doing 47-48mpg.

820511 2009-10-14 19:29:00 I kinda disagree with some of the suggestions above. Going via Taupo has something advantageous - the great Superloo (costs 40c per person).

If your trip is going to last between 7 - 9 hours a toilet break at least half way is probably essential.

820512 2009-10-14 19:38:00 I was giving the original poster credit for figuring out that once he had driven down SH1 and had gone over the "Hills", he should take SH2.

Guess some of you get lost just stepping outside your own front doors :) :)

:)How about 4 hours 15 minutes Napier to Auckland? With a 10 minute stop!

Of course that was in my young and foolish days.

These days Napier to Taupo is closer to 2 hours for me. I tend to go slower on the hills. Mind you, when I did the fast times it was in a company car. Everyone knows that company cars go faster than private cars!
