820269 2009-10-15 06:58:00 What are the pros and cons for using open dnz? bk T (215)
820270 2009-10-15 07:39:00 Please forgive me if i appear a little "duh" here, but can anyone use open dns? I have PC with ethernet connection to wireless Netgear router and my laptop connects to wireless. Would it be of any benefit in this home network situation?

LL

Yep, sure can.

If your Netgear router supports it, configure the DNS servers there, so you don't have to configure it manually on each machine. Whats the model number?

What are the pros and cons for using open dnz?

Pro's are that it is more reliable and faster than your ISP's DNS servers, and it also offers many features such as web filtering, open DNS homepage, etc

Can't think of any con's, but read Chills post above.

Many people hate their url/search redirection for non-existent domains .

You can turn that off if you sign up and have a static ip (or if you have a dynamic ip, you need to run some client software to track user account/preferences to dynamic ip address) .

Another alternative is to just run your own dns server not that big of a deal .

I'm amazed by all the ISP's who cant seem to run core services correctly anymore such as reliable pop3 mail and DNS .

+1 for those thoughts!

Anyways, yes it is *definitely* worth checking out OpenDNS and giving them a try! The process is easily reversible should you for some reason decide it's *not* for you.

Check out the ways of getting started here:

Perhaps try it just on "computer" first, and if you like it and have more than 1 PC on your home network, then try the "router" option :)

820273 2009-10-15 21:33:00 Ok, I have now changed my router settings to open dns. So far, have not noticed much difference with anything, but will see how it goes.

820274 2009-10-15 23:13:00 I have too.
It seems more "zippy", but that could be an illusion.

It sure is an interesting web site though.

820275 2009-10-16 01:05:00 You possibly need to restart your PC (easiest way of refreshing the DHCP lease), THEN it should be better ;) Chilling_Silence (9)
820276 2009-10-16 03:45:00 I always used to use OpenDNS before changing to Orcon and getting rid of that Belkin router

820277 2009-10-16 04:12:00 Well I just rebooted my router and now things are loading much faster! Also they load much faster on the laptop than they did before. :clap

820278 2009-10-16 04:46:00 Since my last post; I've had to reboot PC and router, to get things working. But it's fine now. Really "smokin' along" in fact:D.

I didn't worry about easing into it, by configuring the computer first, I charged straight into the router - a Dick Smith one. It took me a bit to figure it out, but I got there (hope it stays there:horrified)
