820094 2009-10-14 23:32:00 On my camper I have an sat aerial pole which has 2 big suction caps put a bit of vege oil on the caps and it sticks to the window.
The dish is smaller than the house ones I use it for freeview.
I normally just guess a bit west of north and turn/elevate and tune it with the freeview on screen tuner.
Elevation does not change in NZ much so don't need to pre align it.
I have a sat finder and a compass but find it just as easy to peer thru window to tuning screen or have the kids call out thats good, turn back etc.
Takes no longer than 5 minutes.
Cost 800 big ones for auto sat aerial which is worth as much as the camper.

820095 2009-10-14 23:44:00 like only a westy could ;)

most people are happy to wing it for a camper. but for home setups its a lot different, that last little bit of signal can make all the difference between watching the test or a blue screen !
even with all this digital signal and HDMI etc, its surprising what crap people are happy to put up with all year round.

820096 2009-10-15 22:41:00 Which one is better? UHF aerial or a satellite dish?

I guess I'm going to have to get Freeview some time, I just don't want it randomly cutting out or turning to green squares.

Analog is better in that way because even if the reception is poor and the picture is grainy - you can still see it!

820097 2009-10-15 23:15:00 UHF is alright. Altho the one on this sits on the computer case (a mini aerial). At least it was cheaper than buying a box or a TV with it built in. Its actually better than the outside aerial. But it (the picture) can stop (like freeze for 1-2 secs, sometimes). This is probably normal (whether its a standalone TV, or a tuner for a computer). Depends if you want HD or not. Speedy Gonzales (78)
820098 2009-10-15 23:29:00 Going digital is the way to go even if you still have a CRT TV. A mate of mine has gone digital freeview HD and has a CRT TV and says the picture is alot better than the analogue one.

820099 2009-10-16 09:47:00 To aim your dish accurately - - temporarily replace the LNB out in front of the dish with a heavy duty microwave tricked out to operate with the door open. Swing the dish vaguely in a similar direction to your neighbour's dish. Watch the heavens in the direction your dish is pointing. When you see a very distant flash in the sky, lock your dish in position. Remove the micro-wave, and refit the LNB. After a few days they should have moved a spare satellite into position and you can enjoy the freeview DVB-S in comfort.

P.S. Important - - do not allow the microwave equiped dish to point at the cat or you may have a bit of a domestic on your hands.
