820608 2009-10-14 21:25:00 Telecom are offering me a Thomson TG585 if I sign a 24 month plan with them.
I need to upgrade anyway, so might as well do it.

Right now I have a Dlink DSL-302G (piece of crap) modem and a Linksys WRT54G wireless router.

I'm looking at port forwarding (using my local machine as a webserver), have a PS3, and 3 laptops and a desktop.
Anything I should be aware of, or should I just sell my soul to the devil?

I'm reasonably happy with Telecom, and I see no real reason to switch to anyone else at this stage.

Any thoughts?

820609 2009-10-14 21:48:00 Sell your soul, that modem will do all you need. The 302G's are the devils work anyway, so you can't get any worse. :p The linksys is by far the better wireless router so you could probably keep that and turn the wifi off on the thompson. wratterus (105)

Yeah the 302 is a piece of work, and even more crippled by Xtra's pathetic "secure" firmware.

But the other option I have is a Thomson SpeedTouch 536 (with a 12 month contract), would this be a better option?

So that's the dilemma. Should I just grab the modem and use my router?
Or get the whole package?

Either contract doesn't really bother me, so I ask.

820611 2009-10-14 22:37:00 I agree. :badpc:

Either way will work fine. Is good wifi range especially important to you? The Linksys would be better than the Thompson in that area. The only thing you would gain by only using the 24mth Thompson is a power saving from only having one router going. Wouldn't be much of a saving, but still...

The 12mth Thompson will also work fine with the Linksys, but Telecom isn't likely to go arse over face in the next two years so you should be fine with a long contract. I'd go for the TG585 if it were me.

820614 2009-10-15 02:47:00 Good stuff. You should notice things are a wee bit snappier after getting rid of the evil 302. Make sure you burn it or drive over it or some such thing, to prevent it ever being used again... :p wratterus (105)
