| 1113604 | 2010-06-25 21:13:00 | Okay I have a Dell Studio laptop that originally came with Vista Ultimate x64 with the Win 7 upgrade to come later. It came and I installed but as feared doing an update has left the machine pretty unstable (as updates usually do). Getting BSOD, media player constantly freezing, McAfee refusing updates until it has been re-installed and then lasts a week before doing the same thing. What I am looking at doing is do a format and install Win 7 fresh but I am unsure if the disks I have will allow it. I have the Vista disk that came with the Dell and a update disk for Win 7 that was sent (both Dell disks). Anyone know if the install would work as above? Don't want to try if it is not going to work. I did ask on the Dell site on their forums but the wasters deleted the post citing not following their terms (which I can only put down to my user name being my email address as it would not let me use anything else). They have not yet replied to my customer support request asking the same thing either after a week even though the e-mail says someone will respond within two days. |

If anything you do turns to custard you have the image ready. *Most impt of anything is backup. What if you get up tomorrow morning and Windows refuses to load  |

Vista>Win7 isnt a great update, start fresh, but check for Dell drivers and software 1st for Win 7 Sounds good. I have a full Ghost backup so it things go haywire I can restore back to that but I really want a fresh install. I have never ever had any good luck with upgrades of any kind and always go for the fresh installs even if it means re-installing all the software but the Dell put me off originally. Have got all the drivers and software from Dell site so should be okay. Will do it probably in a couple of weeks when I am on holiday. |
