| 1113192 | 2010-06-24 22:46:00 | Morning All I'm being a little lazy here, but thought sometimes it's easier to just post a question and hope for an answer... We have an SQL server, has 6 physical drives on an HP G5 server. C drive on that SQL server is Raid 1. That drive is only 36gig and running short of space. I have purchased two 146gig HP SAS drives to replace the 2 36gig drives. My question is this: Can I simply hot swap in 1 of the 146gig drives, then wait for it to build, then swap in the other one, and then will it be set automatically to 146gig? Sorry, I expect this is very simple for some but don't want to go ahead if I am missing some important step. I've done heaps of hot swaps on the HDs there but always from/to same size. |

If you swap in a bigger drive, the array gets rebuilt, then swap in the other and the array gets rebuilt. So you will have 36Gb logical drive on top on of array, however the array will need to be expanded, then you will need some software which can resize the system partition and for servers their is no free software and personal free versions will not work. If this was a virtual server, it would be no problems. What server o/s are you using?, 2003 should swim in 36Gb!, i would look at what is taking your space. |

Actually I just had a 'proper' look on that disk (i only contract part-time here so never time to do things properly!) and I note that there are only about 12gigs of files and folders, on a 36gig drive, with 8 gig free at the moment. The stripe size is 128k, but I feel I am still missing some space here, regardless of sector size? I was hoping someone here was familiar with the HP Array CLI that will allow me to upsize the new drives. |

I am familiar with HP CLI...just, I try not to use it unless I have too, however that still doesnt take the need for the system drive to be expanded away from the fact a reboot will be necessary, even after installing software to resize the partition. It would be better to expand the array without the o/s running, quicker too. As long as the log files are on your data partition you should be fine. the 8Gb free doesnt include your swap file remember and you could always move it.. |
