1112842 2010-06-23 15:27:00 Well its been 8 years since I last built a PC and now my laptop has died Im excited to get back to tinkering. I need a multi-purpose system as I will be doing video editing and gaming but not until next year, at the mo I just need a comp for surfing and research. My plan is to spend a little over $1000 initially on bare essentials and add RAM and a GPU later in the year so I put together this:

Asus DRW-24B1LT Dual Layer SATA DVD Writer, Black
Gigabyte GA-MA785GT-UD3H Motherboard (AM3)
1x 2GB Kingston DDR3-1333 Memory Module
1TB Western Digital WD1002FAEX Caviar Black SATA3 Hard Drive
AMD Phenom II X4 955 CPU (AM3), Black Edition
NZXT Beta Steel Mid-Tower Chassis, 500w PSU
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit DVD (OEM)

The NZXT 500w PSU comes with the case for only $72 so I'll probably swap that out when I add a GPU with something more reliable and at around 700-800w. -For now, I like the case and I've looked at 100's lol.

Have I overlooked anything? any advice / comments appreciated, cheers.

1112843 2010-06-23 20:11:00 Buy the case without the PSU:

Get a Corsair PSU, it matters.

1112844 2010-06-23 22:22:00 At least double your dimm's so you have dual channel memory!, x64 works best with at least 4Gb SolMiester (139)
1112845 2010-06-23 23:59:00 hmmm... my wife initially said I could spend $500 and it was quite an effort and involved lots of housework and foot massages to get to $1000. (and the current total is $1100...)
And I dont want to settle for less in the processor department. RAM I can add at any time and 2GB is fine for now.
But there isnt much cash left for a decent PSU, I could downsize the WD Black HD for a Green one but then I'd have a lame $150 PSU, whereas if I settle on a $80 psu now then in 3 months I can spend $400 on a decent one.

1112846 2010-06-24 00:18:00 Ahhh, the old blackmail the wife trick, could be in order! You have my sympathy!...LOL..foot massages, and always when there is a program you want to watch! SolMiester (139)
1112847 2010-06-24 00:21:00 $400 on a PSU? Why would you do that?? Just get this one at least:
www.computerlounge.co.nz

Or preferably a Corsair one:

I wouldn't skimp on the PSU either, as it is the component powering up your entire PC.

1112849 2010-06-24 01:08:00 Ok so the corsair 650w psu would put me at $1200.
What about the HD, is there much difference between the WD Green and Black? the MB doesnt support the Blacks max 6gb/s anyway
Could drop to 640gb black or 1tb green to cut $50 or a 500gb green to cut $70. Then I suppose I could drop $200 on a 2nd HD in 3 months and probably makes better use of $$
Any HD advice, I hate seagate, they've failed on me in the past, WD has always been good to me.

1112850 2010-06-24 01:16:00 Yeah, I use WD now, i have the blue drives!, wouldnt go green myself, they spin down too frequently...
Give us a breakdown on the costs.....$1200 for a poxy Phenom II without a GPU is pricey IMO
