1113361 2010-06-25 02:12:00 the monitor was fine at 1am this morning. what could have happened. their was no power outage as my laptop was still going. my tv was still on. i don't get it Easy really - it could have simply died - these things do happen for what seems no reason. Going fine one minute dead the next.

It could have also been a power spike or surge and that caused damage, not enough to blow it right away, but once shut down that was it -- History. OR could have even happened with the monitor turned off-- as long as the power lead is going to the monitor it can receive a surge and do damage.

Having surge protectors are fine, but most of the cheap ones are just that -- cheap rubbish, one spike can kill them, leaving you unprotected.

Good surge protectors are not the cheap ones, whats even better is a UPS - they cut in at the slightest sign of a power problem, either a surge, or brownout and run off the battery till the power comes right again, or you turn them off manually so as not to drain the battery. Once again not cheap -- but worth every $$. Our UPS's have MANY times saved the PC's from damage.

1113366 2010-06-25 02:44:00 yup goodiesguy (15316)
1113367 2010-06-25 03:08:00 Hate to inform -- but its only a cheap Surge protector.

While it might be Ok for some cheaper appliances, I wouldn't trust those types for expensive computer equipment - maybe a cheap printer only.

While they are better than nothing, from memory those types are only worth about $25 - $30 from places like the warehouse.

Once again, better than nothing, but a semi good power surge or spike will go right through them. These sort (www.imagef1.net.nz) are slightly better, and start at around $90 -- (priced from DSE)

The UPS power supplies we have here are not top of the line by a long shot, but they do work good as they have saved PC's / Monitors from damage several times, they cost approx $300 each.

1113368 2010-06-25 04:56:00 ok, i'll look into buying a new surge protector. its weird now having one black and one silver monitor. the dell one was black and suited nicely. oh well. we can't have everything perfect goodiesguy (15316)
1113369 2010-06-25 05:15:00 (I'm only JOKING OK) -- Mask off the actual screen and spray paint the rest black to match  :p Call it "Monitor Modding"

On more serious note "la la la la" :D

Any computer component or Monitor can fail at any time -- Murphys law usually dictates it happens at the most inconvenient time.
