1113087 2010-06-24 10:52:00 Ok i got an email from a client saying his site had vanished from the net,

So I investigated and found his domain had expired, according to him he has received no emails telling him to renew and he has no login,

I looked at the whois for the account,

and he is listed as the registrar of the domain but the admin and technical contact are listed as the former designer, when he tried to recover a password it was sent to the former designer, is he going to be able to get hold of the domain, or is he going to need to deal with the former designer who i assume is the account holder

the domain is listed as cancelled

The domain should be listed as 'pending release' unless it has actually been cancelled? If it has been cancelled, then I am not sure on what the rules are.

This horrifies me. I see this all the time. Sure you might want to pay someone to create you site but WHY would you leave them in control of it??!!

1113090 2010-06-24 21:52:00 Been down similar track. Host provider sold out and the new host wanted me to sign up for same service at 4x rate! When I asked for my domain back they said no, no, 2x rate! It took me about 4 requests to get domain released to me to take to my choice of host. After that I made sure my domain was independently registered with me as owner, registrant and technical admin. coldot (6847)
1113091 2010-06-24 23:12:00 If I had the UDAI I wouldn't have this problem

Whenever i set up a site, i always set up an account for the customer at a domain registrar and explain to them why, and that it is to protect their brand.

It only takes a minute to set to up so the client receives the renewal notice, anyway he is contacting the domain registrar and the former designer today, so we'll see how it goes

The domain whois says that it expired on the 20th of this month and was cancelled the same day, apparently it will be released in September

1113092 2010-06-25 03:13:00 Update, he rang the registrar and they have let him renew and given him the passwords etc

hes relieved and happy, and pulling his hosting from the former designing and giving it to me
