822527 2009-10-27 04:36:00 My 2c worth:
My mother bought one for the car, she occasionally gets calls and in my parents line of work they do their best not to miss calls, they're usually important if they've come through to their Cell.

Her problem was as she gets out of the car and walks away, the Bluetooth visor-kit would turn itself off, so when she would come back from shopping etc it would require her to re-pair it each time, it wouldn't automatically. Is this likely the fault of the device or of the handset? I think she has a Vodafone 541, unsure of the bluetooth device.

That sounds like a fault with the device.
I have a Parrot bluetooth unit and it works well.
It can be paired with up to 5 phones and it downloads all your contacts to the bluetooth unit so when someone calls it says the callers name.
Once a phone is paired with the unit you just need to be within range and it will automatically reconnect.

822528 2009-10-28 08:41:00 I bought a BlueAnt S3 from DSE on my VIP account and got a significant price reduction. I've set it up and hope it works OK when the time comes as I've had no chance to try it yet. I had some trouble with pairing but it seems to pick up OK now. The only problem is my Samsung W531 doesn't support voice commands so I can't dial out without stopping my car.

I note that some TM sellers of this particular phone claim that it does support voice commands but I can't find that feature so I think they are mistaken.

Cheers

822529 2009-10-28 18:51:00 I believe your phone must also support it. In the case of the iPhone, only the 3GS supports Voice Dialing, not the original iPhone or the 3G. Chilling_Silence (9)
822530 2009-10-28 21:20:00 I have installed a new car stereo that is bluetooth enabled. It is a JVC KD-R805 and it works great with my Nokia.

A good piece of advice given to me is if you are considering going with a car stereo for your hands-free is to get one with an external microphone. This can then be put on top of your steering wheel column, sun visor or up by the rear view mirror for best voice pick-up. Some systems have the microphone built into the face plate and the person you are talking to can have a hard time hearing you.
