1113636 2010-06-26 00:17:00 I have been asked by our Principal to introduce networking to our students.

I am interested if the community could suggest fun things my students can do with TCP/IP.

One of the lessons I'm planning is to teach students how to use a packet analyzer (Etherdetect). I would appreciate any suggestions to contribute to the lesson plan. Any suggestions for making the experience richer and that assist in their understanding of TCP/IP would be most welcome.

The lessons are intended for Year 13 students of various backgrounds. Mixed learning styles. Our network is running computers with Windows XP and networked via switches but there is no Internet.

+1

If/when you want to teach them how to set up a network, Cisco's Packet Tracer is quite a god emulator.

1113644 2010-06-26 13:29:00 +1 for wireshark. Free, and it's the best AFAIK.

As for fun... well, there's APR cache poisoning attacks... port scanning... metasploit... wait, I'm getting carried away here...

One thing you could do is get them to swap small (<1Kb) text files, then set wireshark to show only SMB traffic. Pouring through the data, they should see the contents of the files they just swapped.

Or, set up an HTTP server on the LAN. Then, show only HTTP traffic, then get them to visit the server, and pour through the data to see how much they actually reveal over a network connection.
