US cloud storage supplier SwissDisk has suffered a catastrophic hardware failure resulting in users being unable to access their data.

A user said: "The email is bit unclear. At first it sounds like they are trying to recover the data but then they say "all accounts will be required to re-register" which makes it sound like everything is gone."

822473 2009-10-20 20:44:00 MMM...why would you, 1TB externals are so cheap now.

I guess it's good to be able to access data from anywhere, but you'd back up your cloud surely ?

822474 2009-10-21 03:48:00 Well that is where it's all heading if you read any articles and the such, all are predicting it except me gary67 (56)
822475 2009-10-21 03:54:00 It's the same as any other type of storage, don't have your data stored only in the one place or device. CYaBro (73)

There are a lot of negatives with cloud computing, but also some positives. CC you are putting all your trust in a company, which tommorrow could go out of business, and lose all your data. There was one in the US recently, who sent all their customers an email, to tell them that they had one day to remove their data, otherwise they would lose it it all. Others have just diappeared over night. A US mobile company recently also lost all their customers data, a few weeks ago. I personally would never signup to one of these cloud computing accounting companies, as they have no way of locally storing the data, so you are solely reliant on their company. If they did ever go under, I am sure the IRD would not have any sympathy.

822479 2009-10-21 18:36:00 Well I feel sorry for all those who are mislead by such companies on the security of their data on their servers. It's pretty poor service if things like this happen. But I guess if in doubt, have 2 back ups! Chris09 (15218)

Yes, and even the top companies such as Microsoft with the Sidekick, can lose their customers data. I don't think you can put your trust in any other company, becuase any company can close their doors, and go into liquidation.
I have 3 backups for my most important files. I have one backup on a seperate harddrive inside the computer, and another to a SATA external hardrive, both performing backups every 1 and 3 days. This protects against drive failures. I then run a weekly backup on a seperate external drive, which I store in another place, which is to protect against fire and theft. I don't backup over the cloud, becuase the large amount of data , I don't think it is worth the hassle, cost, and bandwidth usage. Portable harddrives are too cheap now.

822481 2009-10-22 02:52:00 I like Google Docs and SkyDrive because I can access some things from any PC.

But I would never seriously use either or depend on it, and certainly not as a backup solution.
