1113657 2010-06-26 00:51:00 I have a Pentium 4 operating on Windows XP connected to Xtra by a D-link DSL-G604 wireless router. I have recently installed Ubuntu 10.4 on a separate Sata HD without installation problems so that I can run either OS by selection through Grub. However I have been unable to get the internet connection established in Ubuntu though a ping test implies that the connection is there. Please, has anyone a suggestion as to how I can establish an internet connection in Ubuntu 10.4? Xam (11850)
1113658 2010-06-26 04:02:00 Could you provide us with a few more details?
What are you pinging to test connectivity, and what is the result?
Please paste the contents of the file '/etc/resolv.conf' here.
Please paste the output of the command 'sudo route -n' here.
Please paste the output of the command 'sudo ifconfig -a' here.
You say the ping is working - so what is failing?

1113659 2010-06-26 09:49:00 Are you connecting via wireless or via a cable? If wireless, could you test via cable and see if it can load pages. If it works, then we need to work on the wireless settings. johnd (85)
1113660 2010-06-26 10:13:00 It sometimes pays to set a static IP address for the PC with gateway DNS etc. mikebartnz (21)
1113661 2010-06-26 23:55:00 Many thanks Erayd for you help but, while downloading the information to CD wasn't a major problem converting the files to be read by windows for sending was altogether another problem and I doubt that they will be of much use to you in this form:
///E:/PC%20World.odt!! file:///E:/PC%20World.odt file:/// E:/.checksum.md5

I tested the Ping through 10.1.1.1 and the ten result I received ranged from0.62 to 0.67ms.

1113662 2010-06-27 02:30:00 Many thanks Erayd for you help but, while downloading the information to CD wasn't a major problem converting the files to be read by windows for sending was altogether another problem and I doubt that they will be of much use to you in this form:
///E:/PC%20World.odt!! file:///E:/PC%20World.odt file:/// E:/.checksum.md5Hi Xam,

Unfortunately those aren't the file contents - that's just what you named them on Windows. If you just paste the text itself into a post here that will be more than sufficient; no need to upload the files or anything.

I notice you've saved the information into OpenOffice files - if you do this, you'll need OpenOffice installed in order to read them.

If this is too difficult and / or confusing for you, just take some pictures of your screen and post those.

I tested the Ping through 10.1.1.1 and the ten result I received ranged from0.62 to 0.67ms.This indicates that your connection to the router is fine, but has nothing to do with the internet.

Try pinging 210.48.100.45 - what happens?

What about if you ping 'pressf1.co.nz'?

1113663 2010-06-27 05:05:00 Sorry for the delay but the neighbours rang to say that my first lamb of the season had arrived so children and parents have been out in the cold rejoicing.
I trust I got the photo downloaded correctly.

210.8.100.45 ping result was negative!! I have a lot to learn!

Many thanks for the efforts that you have made to help me. Trust I will be able to pass this help on.

1113664 2010-06-27 07:36:00 I trust I got the photo downloaded correctly.Yep, that's great .

The image was missing one thing I asked for though - could you please post the contents of the file '/etc/resolv.conf'? Whatever you've got at the top there (first 7 lines of text) is part of a script; it has nothing to do with /etc/resolv.conf.

If you're unsure how to get this file, running the command 'cat /etc/resolv.conf' in a terminal will display it for you.

210.8.100.45 ping result was negative!!That's not the right IP address! You should be pinging 210.48.100.45 - could you let me know the result of that?

Many thanks for the efforts that you have made to help me.No worries :).

1113665 2010-06-28 01:58:00 Oh dear I feel that I am swimming in deep water and the arms aren't moving as they auta!
However: Yes, I pinged a wrong address previously (Sorry!) but 210.48.100.45 results of 5 pings were: 45.7ms, 44.20, 43.70, 44.60 and 44.90ms. A further 5 pings resulted in similar figures.

As for 'cat /etc/resolv.conf' all that I got was:
'#Generated by Network Manager
nameserver 10.1.1.1' - which I don't think looks very helpful as we know this is just an Xtra connection.
If you decide to give up on me here I will just again express my sincerest thanks for, and appreciation of, your effort. You have given of your very best!

1113666 2010-06-28 04:40:00 Oh dear I feel that I am swimming in deep water and the arms aren't moving as they auta! That's all right - if you feel you're drowning at any point, just sing out and we'll throw you a life ring .

However: Yes, I pinged a wrong address previously (Sorry!) but 210.48.100.45 results of 5 pings were: 45.7ms, 44.20, 43.70, 44.60 and 44.90ms. A further 5 pings resulted in similar figures. That's good - it means that you do in fact have an internet connection, despite whatever trouble you're having getting it to work as you'd like.

What happened when you tried to ping 'pressf1.co.nz'?

As for 'cat /etc/resolv.conf' all that I got was:
'#Generated by Network Manager
nameserver 10.1.1.1'That's very helpful - it's exactly what I was after. What that means is that your computer's DNS config is probably correct (based on the other data you've given me so far, it looks fine).

If you decide to give up on me here I will just again express my sincerest thanks for, and appreciation of, your effort. You have given of your very best!Nope, won't be giving up - you may rest assured that this problem will be solved for you :).
