824185 2009-10-26 02:00:00 A friend is wanting to get broadband for the first time and is being asked by potential providers whether she has a monitored alarm, and when she says she has they say she will need a filter, costing about $200.

Someone else I know has both broadband and a monitored alarm, but has no filter (as far as she is aware).

What is the issue here?

824186 2009-10-26 02:24:00 According to this (www.geekzone.co.nz) you'll have to connect a 2nd line. Thats probably why it'll cost $200 or so. You should have a filter, or you will have probs (when it dials out). You'll probably get cut off. Altho one of the posts above said someone just used a $20 filter on the line Speedy Gonzales (78)
824187 2009-10-26 02:25:00 Because the monitored alarm will be hard wired into the phone line somewhere you need a tech to come out and install a master ADSL splitter on the line.
This splits the ADSL signal and the phone line to seperate pairs of the internal phone wiring.
It means that you don't need filters on every phone/fax/sky etc but it also means that you have to choose one jack to be the dedicated broadband jack.
You can't do a self-install as there is no where for you to put a filter on the monitored alarm.

This^

I install alarms for a living. When they are monitored and there is broadband, the data has a hard time getting past the noise on the line. You don't have to get Telecom to do it though.

Your alarm installation company may be able to do it cheaper.
