824003 2009-10-25 03:21:00 Does anyone have any experience with these, and if so, is there one you'd recommend?

My "instant-on" solution at the moment is to simply put the netbook running W7 RC1 into sleep mode, instead of shutting it down.

I'm assuming instant would be within 5 seconds?

Same here :D (except it's XP, and it's shut down overnight).

824009 2009-11-30 07:06:00 I have recently installed Moblin (www.moblin.org) on my netbook, and love it - despite some technical difficulties caused by a dodgy SDHC card. It's very quick to boot up, very responsive, and has the key features I need. I would highly recommend it to anyone who predominantly uses their netbook for web browsing.

Just a couple of notes: for some reason, they omitted SMB and NFTS support by default, which means if you want to access files on a windows network share, or browse a local hard drive that uses the NFTS filesystem, you will have to install additional software to make it work. For those without linux experience, this could be a bit off putting.

824010 2009-11-30 17:27:00 I'm hanging to try Chrome-OS on real hardware, it rocked in a VM.

Good to know about Moblin, I'm hoping work will trade my 17" laptop for a nicer 10" UMD soon :D

All of those sound a heck of a lot better than Chrome-OS, considering you have many more applications than just a web browser...

824012 2009-12-01 01:31:00 Just had look at the OS that was posted in #6:thumbs: prestomypc

Google can keep its chrome OS - OK this one costs $19.95 USA - but IT WORKS on a standard desktop PC. I'm writing this reply now from it. Screenshot from camera (www.imagef1.net.nz(Large).JPG) -- Have not figured out if it has a print screen yet.

PC= P4 3.0 , 80GB HDD, FX5200 GFX 1.5 GB RAM

You get a dual boot option - then 9 seconds later - fully working program. + you have access to your other OS as well. Was reading on the site and you can install various programs - Main Drive (www.imagef1.net.nz(Large).JPG)
